I was just about to say that both CoM and TWBB were maybe too idiosyncratic for the voters to get behind and then I see that Craig beat me to it by three hours.

Anyway, I'm especially happy for: Casey Affleck, Emile Hirsch, Ratatouille, and everything for No Country.

I don't now how these awards people think and the NBR is especially hard to figure. I'm under the working theory that CoM and TWBB are just too difficult for the voters to get excited about. TWBB might rack up some critics awards, but I'll be shocked if There Will Be Oscars.

I'm not saying they should take away Scorsese's Oscar(s) or anything from last year, but it was a fucking joke that Children of Men was ignored for (at the very least) some technical awards. From what I understood, it was because it was held back from many of the advance screenings that these awards nominators/voters types attend. I can only imagine, considering the general buzz I've heard, that There Will Be Blood has suffered a similar fate here. It may not be the same level of utter stupidity that torpedoed Children of Men's awards chances last year, but I imagine it's a similar lack of fore thought. Course, the marketing of CoM was mishandled from day one so maybe it was a special case.

Then again, the Bucket List and Kite Runner are on that list too. Who knows? Maybe the crack smokers nudged TWBB off the list?

Am I wrong thinking that their picks are largely meaningless? Interesting to see some films getting attention, but other than that...

That possibility occurred to me too Joel - not enough members of the NBR actually saw the film. But if that was true, why then was Sweeney Todd not hampered in the same way?

There Will be Blood probably got overlooked because it was not properly screened in time for consideration. That's what happened to Children of Men last year when it was shut of the nominations for virtually every major award. Wouldn't surprise me if the chuckleheads at the studio screwed up once again in properly promoting a film opening late in the year.

Hahahah.

Maybe The Bucket List is the best movie ever? I haven't seen it or The Kite Runner, so I guess anything is possible. Seems pretty unlikely though.

Weirdos? The 5th from the right is my sister. She's the number 3# Oscar prognosticator in all of Kazakhstan!

The Bucket List is better than TWbB and I'm Not There?

But for every weird outcome there were many more deserving ones. Particular congratulations to the Coens, Casey Affleck, Andrew Dominik, Amy Ryan, and the Lars team.
