Houston, we have a winner
On Friday, the Houston Film Critics Society joined the forces of all that is good in the cinematic universe by choosing No Country for Old Men as the year’s best film and Javier Bardem as the best supporting actor. They were also wise enough to see that Daniel Day-Lewis’ performance in There Will Be Blood (now playing in a major city near you) was something more than a John Huston impersonation.
No huge surprises on the Houston list except for perhaps Tim Burton as Best Director for Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. I’m not arguing, I’m just saying. Also of note is that The Diving Bell and the Butterfly looks to be the clear favorite among critics groups for Best Foreign Film (stick that in your bong and smoke it, Mr. Foundas). It’s not up for an Oscar in that category, but that’s just Oscar’s loss, isn’t it?

Now don’t just sit there, go to a movie or something.

Natch. Isn’t that another Stan Lee word making it into the vernacular? ‘Nuff said.
I think it might even be older than Stan. But perhaps not, I’m no etymologist. Though in fourth grade I wanted to be an entomologist.
:-)
I love the Outstanding Achievement in Cinema award given to Philip Seymour Hoffman for his body of work in 2007. He absolutely deserves it and should be getting more attention in these precursors than he has been. Here’s hoping AMPAS remembers him.
I should’ve pointed that out.
You know, I wonder if PSH has been a victim of vote splitting, because seriously any one of his performances this year are worthy.
Very good point, Craig. That didn’t occur to me.
I think that may be the problem for Tommy Lee Jones as well. Maybe some are voting him for lead in Elah, others for supporting in No Country. Good to see that BAFTA included him on their long list for Elah.
Awards shmawards. I’ll betcha PSH and TLJ and Christian Bale sleep well at night knowing they kicked ass and took names this year.
Kansas City rings in. They loved TWBB. :-)

Thanks Alison, I’ll update the chart.
How about that tie for Mr. Schnabel?
Yes, I was very happy to see that. And Diving Bell won Best Foreign.
Oh, and look. Sweeney Todd got best science fiction/horror film.
I’m seriously beginning to wonder what would’ve happened with these critics awards if TWBB had played for them sooner.
I know it played for industry types and for LA and NY critics starting back in November, but I don’t think a lot of other people saw it until later after many of these critics groups had already voted.
Do you think that if it had it would have taken awards that were given to No Country?
Reminding you that I don’t know Jack, yes I think it would have.
I say this as a person who could just as easily have switched his top 2 favorite movies of the year, however.
