  1. Hey Craig! Lars love.

  2. Lars hasn’t been doing too bad in the precursors. A couple of noms for Gosling and now the screenplay nod.

These are all great and deserving choices except for the omission of Atonement. I really would have rather seen that on the list than Into the Wild.

Thrilled for Jenkins. I really liked The Savages and the screenplay was excellent to me (in my non-professional knowledge of screenplays).

  3. I had Lars in my #10 spot for a while, but I went with Paris je t’aime…it was more smartypants elitist.

Really happy for Jenkins. I love to see the writer-directors getting the love (Coens, PTA, Jenkins, Penn, Apatow).

I’m about ready to call Atonement D.O.A, Oscarwise. I don’t know.

  4. Like I said over at Awards Daily, I agree with you Alison, Atonement over Into The Wild.

Glad for everything else though, especially The Savages, which hasn’t been nominated that much this season….and Lars.

Knocked Up is also a pick I agree with or atleast understand, but think there were better, such as Before The Devil Knows You’re Dead or I’m Not There, in my opinion of course.

  5. Everyone is saying that about Atonement, Craig, and it’s kind of disappointing. It was a terrific movie, with excellent performances all around. Keira Knightley is not my favorite actress but I thought she did a terrific job in a role that (to me) was not easy to play. She had to express a lot while remaining very subtle and restrained (she was upper class). And though I haven’t read the book yet (I plan to) the consensus from people who have is that it is a very difficult work to adapt to film yet it was masterfully adapted.

I stil think there will be AMPAS voters might go for it. As Serena wisely pointed out, there is a large portion of British members.

  6. I’m not a so and so guild awards the etc, etc, kinda guy usually but this nominees brought out the fact that most of the movies that I really loved this year were adapted from previous material.

My point? I’l think of that later.

  7. Adaptations are usually dangerous territory, but it’s worth adding to what Chuck said that there have simply been some really terrific ones this year. I haven’t read Oil! and from what I understand PTA only used it as the basis from the first part of TWBB, but No Country is a pretty amazing adaptation. I know some have had this or that issue with something that was changed or left out, but I’m not sure how much better of a job they could’ve done to convey the novel, but still make an interesting movie.

I haven’t had time for reading lately, but Atonement is next on my list.

You’re right Alison that Atonement is probably not dead, but not knowing much about such things, I can only go with the evidence as it’s presented to me. So far the evidence is grim.

  8. I just noticed that there were 3 women nominated and only one of them was named Diablo Cody. Though I think the buzz over DC is 84% deserved (the other 16% is only because no one ever really lives up to the hype), it’s nice to see some of the other fine work done by women getting a little attention. Particularly suprising (and welcome) is Nancy Oliver for Lars and the Real Girl. Glimmer is probably out celebrating.

  9. smiling and almost in tears,craig. :)

  10. I’m another one of those Lars fans. I’m quite pleased that Oliver has received some recognition. Loved Gosling.

Also very happy that Jenkins has been acknowledged. In fact, I’ve been reassessing Laura Linney’s Oscar chances and think she has a shot — boosted by the WGA nod, her performance of course, and some Academy sympathy.

I don’t count Atonement out just yet, but MC and Juno seem to have too much popular and guild support to overcome, and it’s competing with Diving Bell, as well, as I feel NCfOM, TWBB and ITW are pretty safe bets

  11. ‘i’m another one of those Lars fans. I’m quite pleased that Oliver has received some recognition. Loved Gosling.’

    yay !!!! :)
