Directors in Tentative Deal with Bean Counting Stooges

Variety’s got the details on what is being called a “groundbreaking and substantial” deal between the Directors Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers giving rise to hopes that a deal with the Writers Guild of America will follow.
Most importantly, the DGA was able to reach agreement with the AMPTP on residual payments for so called new-media, the same sticking point that caused WGA talks to stall on December 7.
If ratified by the 13,500 DGA members, the deal will take effect July 1 when the current contract expires.

Wow, I have no idea how this deal really works out or directly compares to the old contract, but it’s nice to see progress being made. It continues to gall me that the studios have so little respect for the writers that they were able to negotiate a contract with the DGA so quickly and easily.
Perhaps the DGA simply has better leadership. I’ve heard grumblings about the WGA dropping the ball on this, that or the other thing. I’m not saying I’m not on their side, just that maybe they could’ve been better negotiators.
