From Paris to Hollywood

City of Light, City of Angels Film Festival

We’re proudly pro France here at LiC and we’re especially pro French cinema. One of the monkeys even likes to wear a beret, a striped shirt and a red kerchief on casual Fridays. With that in mind, we’re pleased to note that the 12th Annual City of Lights, City of Angels Film Festival kicks off in Hollywood on April 14th.

The full schedule will be announced tomorrow, but here’s a partial list for now:

The opening film will be the North American Premiere of Welcome to the Land of the Shtis (Bienvenue Chez Les Ch’Tis), Dany Boon’s fish out of water comedy that has already dominated the box office in France. Meanwhile, The Secret of the Grain, winner of the 2008 Cesar for Best Picture, and the World Premiere of Christian Faure’s Behind the Walls (Les Hauts Murs) will close the festival. In between, there will be 25 more features including the Los Angeles Premiere of Claude Lelouch’s Roman De Gare, the West Coast Premiere of Jean-Paul Salome’s Female Agents (Les Femmes de l¹ombre), the US Premiere of Florent Siri’s Intimate Enemies and the West Coast Premiere of Claude Miller’s A Secret.

Additional screenings include Anne le Ny’s Those Who Remain, Cedric Klapisch’s Paris, Celine Sciamma’s Water Lilies, Michel Hazanavicius’ OSS 117 and Eric Guirado’s The Grocer’s Son, plus the world premiere presentation of a restored print of Fritz Lang’s Secret Beyond the Door (1948).

Tickets will be available in advance from the COL•COA website on March 14th when the full schedule is announced.

  1. I can’t speak for the other films in the series, but I highly recommend WATER LILIES, an emotionally-complex and highly involving story of a trio of teenage girls who, for one reason or another, don’t fit in with those around them. It’s a rare movie that manages to really capture the psychological miasma that is high school, but WATER LILIES pulls it off with a minimum of cliché. So definitely check that one out- I know at least one other regular reader here feels the same way.

  2. Thanks for the tip, Paul.

  3. Anyone know when Water Lilies may come to NYC? :-)

  4. I had to read “Welcome to the Land of the Shtis” three times before concluding that it was not in fact a typo. I kept thinking maybe it was a French movie about America. I wouldn’t hold it against them.

Thanks for the reminder about Water Lilies, Paul. I seem to recall reading something about it a ways back on Screengrab and being intrigued.

  5. Alison, Water Lilies is playing at MOMA on March 30.

No idea about any kind of general releae.

  6. Thanks, Craig. :-)

  7. Just think of me as Julie McCoy, your cruise director.

  8. LOL. Okay, Julie. ;-)

  9. Great stuff here for sure; hope to be able to see some these at some point at the aforementioned MOMA or elsewhere, if they have runs.
