Friday Filler

For reasons I can’t explain (and wouldn’t care to), I stumbled across a blog entry a couple of weeks ago on Eli Roth’s Myspace page about a recent Iron Maiden concert he’d attended at The Forum in L.A. Illustrating the post were several photographs of Mr. Roth looking like a huge dork next to Yannick Gers and Metallica’s Lars Ulrich etc.
This is completely un-noteworthy, except that Roth was wearing an Ingmar Bergman t-shirt that was made out to look like the Iron Maiden logo. This is still completely un-noteworthy actually unless you like to collect images of douche nozzles in full nozzle regalia, but then today on SlashFilm I see a picture of Roth wearing a Scorsese by way of Scorpions t-shirt. Suddenly we’re not just talking about an isolated instance of douchebaggery, we’re potentially talking about an entire douche trend.
According to SlashFilm, you can get these and several other t-shirts from LA’s own CineFile Video. Be the first on your block to commodify your favorite directors and your favorite aging heavy metal acts all in one delightful t-shirt. Just don’t put pictures of yourself up on Myspace or I will find them and I will mock you.

Could this be next?

Some jackass at a video store discovered those “band fonts” on some free fonts web site one night and got clever with his nerdery.
Lucky us.
These are utterly hilarious. I’m not a fan of that kind of metal but there’s a chance I would get that Herzog/Danzig one. Just because I love Werner. I am excited to see him as “The Scary German” in The Grand.
That Bergman one is pretty great, too. Hell, I like ‘em all. I think it’s a great idea.
Wait…so Eli Roth watches Bergman films? Or is he just trying give himself credibility AND look cool at the same time?
I’d say he failed on both fronts.
Do NOT make me come over there Justin! (I’m kidding)
There’s a small chance I’d share your enthusiasm if the shirt was on Scarlett Johansson, but Eli Roth just looks silly.
I should add that CineFile is a fine (if somewhat snotty and inconveniently located [for me]) video store.
As a former metalhead, I have to say these are funny.
Oh my. I think these look idiotic, no offense to those who don’t. Generally I find most of these mind-melds pretty bad unless they’re really clever or really mocking of one of the original sources. In this case I don’t think these fit either criteria, but that’s just me.
If a heavy metal logo will get the kidz interested in Bergman or Fassbinder, can that be all bad? It’s a way of making this stuff cool.
Rawk On!
Just for shits and giggles, I created the next in the series and appended it to the original post.
I’ll concede that, Christian, but…didn’t metal kind of die out in the 80’s anyway? Maybe not.
Craig, how about a Shyamalan? That could be the name of a metal band anyway.
I don’t see what’s wrong with these, t-shirts are great. Not being a metal guy, the only one I’d have any interest in is Scorsese.
What’s the draw without a connection to the band?
I guess it’s a sort of familiar branding of beloved film icons…I don’t know.
Why not corporate logos like Coca Cola or Microsoft?
Metal dead? Bite your bat! Ozzy and Iron Maiden are still having huge sell-out tours.
I love that Roth logo. Although technically, Rush is prog-rock, a big difference. Smart lyrics fer one.
Yeah well, it’s the only one I could get to look like Roth without too much trouble.
It’s clever in a pointless sort of way and that’s why I find it annoying. You could put any name in the font of a metal band and somehow apply some level of clever cool to it, but what does that mean?
Does Scorsese connote Scorpions? Or metal? Not so much for me. I suppose I always felt he was more Rolling Stones than Scorps. Does Herzog feel like Danzig? Eh, not so much. I kind of think of him as being more punk rock.
But then again, that would be me applying my opinions of the artists to the bands and maybe it works fine for you. If that’s your bag, enjoy, it just doesn’t appeal to me.
On the other hand, I have to agree that metal is far from dead. HAIR BANDS died in the 80’s and Scorpion was verging on a hair band, but metal is still going strong.
I think it’s funny because of the sheer incongruity of it all.
BERGMAN RULEZ!
I guess the irony is lost on me when I see it on Eli Roth, but yeah, I see what you’re saying.
The next thing you know, Farberware will be ripping off the Sweeney Todd logo to attract a younger market segment — or maybe Ace Hardware doing a 9-Inch Nails thing.
“Metal dead? Bite your bat! ” lol, Christian. I guess you’re right, though it just doesn’t seem to be as mainstream as it was years ago. Maybe I should take another look as it might experience a resurgence with this…
Speaking of WAR PIGS, anybody going to the Iraq War 5th Anniversary March and Protest in Hollywood at noon today? I will be there, making love not war.
Generals gathered in their masses
Just like witches at black masses…
In Concord, CA on September 30th I saw one hell of a concert with Queensryche, Alice Cooper and Heaven & Hell (essentially, the Dio version of Black Sabbath).
Ah, War Pigs…
Best metal concert ?
Iron Maiden & Scorpions TOGETHER on the tours for Number of the Beast and Blackout, their two best records. Whatta show.
