Cinema Eye Honors ‘Manda Bala’
The 1st Annual Cinema Eye Honors for documentary films were handed out at the IFC Center in Manhattan last night and the big winner was Manda Bala (Send a Bullet).
Winner of the Documentary Grand Jury Prize at Sundance in 2007, Jason Kohn’s look at some of the ways that the pervasive political and economic corruption and violent crime in Brazil have manifested themselves won Cinema Eye awards for best picture, cinematography and editing.
Meanwhile, Seth Gordon’s popular The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters won the audience award through voting at the Cinema Eye website.
The Cinema Eye Honors were created by filmmaker A.J. Schnack (Kurt Cobain About a Son) out of frustration over the most recent Academy Awards documentary short list.
Check out a complete list of winners plus quotes and photos at IndieWIRE.
Manda Bala comes to DVD on April 8.

Sweet. Kong was, as you know, Craig, my favorite from last year. Don’t think I’ve forgotten that you still need to see your old classmate in action.
Manda Bala was little seen last year, but an interesting 3-pronged approach to corruption and kidnapping Sao Paulo. I reviewed it in September if anyone’s looking for more on it. Certainly the cinematography and editing awards he won were well deserved, and for a first film it’s pretty impressive.
I haven’t forgotten Daniel, though I haven’t done anything about it either. I look forward to checking out your Manda Bala review, but methinks I’ll check out the movie first. Your positive word is enough for now.
I know you are already betrothed to the Muriels, but I think we should all come up with some group, set it up as a non-profit and go crazy during award season — cap ou pas cap? (I’m only half-joking).
Sounds like a good idea, Dorothy, and it would be fun. But I don’t think we could beat the Muriels. Muriel is just too cool.
I like the way you think DP.
True, Alison. Muriel is cool, yes…but I was never the “cool” kid. Nerds of the world unite! :-)
Just say the word and I’ll use by smokin’ legal skillz to set it up! Pro bono, of course :)
I just imagined Dorothy saying to Craig ‘does it sound like I’m negotiating?’
It’s a great idea. Revenge of the nerds.
One day we will rule the world!
LOL, sartre. As long as I’m not falling down on my knees in despair having been caught perpetuating fraud and murder, it’s all good!
You’re too smart and savy to be caught.
Any thoughts about what to call the awards?
Is the name “Oscar” taken? I’m kind of fond of it myself. It’s a family thing. ;)
(In fact, if our intent is to see how quickly we can be sued by AMPAS, I say, throwing caution to the wind, let’s go with Oscar!). But seriously folks…
We need a manifesto.
Should Oscar! be a trade mark or copyrighted?
How about the “Grovers”? You know, Oscar, Grover. I would have said the “Felixes”, but that’s already been taken.
Oh, wait…we could get sued by Sesame Street, couldn’t we?
There is also Oscar and Lucinda.
I don’t know - the “Lucindas” doesn’t quite have the right ring to it. Though it would be very literary.
Another option is the “Kennedy Honors.” That’s not taken is it? :P
If we name the group, that would naturally lead to a perfect complementary award (which, for some reason, looks in my head like a Purell hand sanitizer bottle covered in gold…For the record: no, I don’t do drugs).
That’s what we can call it, Dorothy. The Purells. :P
For the record, I don’t do drugs either. Not anymore.
The Purells? Hmmm…interesting (and anti-bacterial). Though we’d still face the same infringement issues (damn you, intellectual property laws!).
Speaking of which, I hope that Paul C. trademarked the Muriels so no one goes stealing it. ;-)
That Muriels thing is catchy…hmmm….Oh, I jest :)
What about The Live Kennedies?
The “Live Kennedies” could work.
Or, what about the Oscarinas? Too close?
I like the Oscarinas. Perhaps we need to generate a list and vote for our favorite. Isn’t that the democratic way? No superdelegates though.
LOL. Definitely no superdelegates.
If it’s okay with Craig, I say everyone votes for the name. :-)
Dorothy, you’re no nerd. Not in my books or in anyone else’s, I’m sure. Not ever.
You’re an absolute goddess.
I do declare, we should call them the Mirandas :-)
And word, sartre and Alison, no superdelegates here…well…maybe Craig should get a superdelegate vote, no?
You’re SO sweet, Dorothy. This is why I adore you.
It’s certainly not up to me. I’d only have one vote. But if Craig were to call his awards the Mirandas, then I could conceivably refer to mine as the Kennedys - in whatever state of consciousness that was acceptable.
When I initially started with my blog, one of my first posts had to do with my awards (which have NOT officially been named BTW). Seeing as I’ve only seen a couple of 2008 theatrical releases to date, In Bruges is the only film that I’ve viewed thus far that’s been noteworthy.
But I can call my awards ANYTHING. What’s most important are my readers and the movies that are involved.
At least as far as I’m concerned…
lol…you guys are funny.
