Get Your Kicks on Route 66
It’s a beautiful spring day in Hollywood, California.
It’s warm, but not too warm and the air is relatively clean for a change. Winter is behind us, the future is ahead of us and it’s road-trip weather; the kind that puts me in the mind of songs like Route 66.
What does that have to do with movies? Well, the original Route 66 traveled right through the heart of Hollywood on its way to the blue waters and sandy beaches of the Pacific Ocean, but more importantly it symbolized the romance of the road; the sense that there was always something or someplace better just over the horizon.
For millions of people over the last century or so, that someplace was Hollywood; either literally for the dreamers who yearned to be a part of the movies, or figuratively for people all over the world who have watched those dreams play out on the big screen; two-hour fantasies flickering by at 24 frames per second.
Of course, these days the reality doesn’t quite live up to the fantasy, but the dreams live on and it’s days like today that make them seem possible.
Maybe they are.

I sure as hell wish I was getting my kicks on route 66 right now, I know I will one day. I don’t even care if it doesn’t match up with the idea I have of it in my optimistic head, I am sure it is great to be in Hollywood.
Where I am, it is a cold and rainy nearly-Autumn night in Smogtown, Johannesburg.
Totally agree, Craig. I feel like hitting the road. I will in fact, in the afternoon. Enjoy.
That’s what dreams are all about, Nick.
Travel safely Christian and enjoy the day.
It’s beautiful here too. It’s Spring even in the mountains of NC. No snow in sight (even though there was ice earlier this week…gotta love NC weather).
Nick, when you’re standing on the stage of the Kodak theatre, you won’t even remember days like this.
Matthew, I have a friend who was born and raised in NC. Plus that was Ava Garner’s home base. Is it as gorgeous as they say? Any pictures I’ve ever seen make it look pretty damn spectacular.
So I put on the news last night and see how horrible the weather has been through large parts of the US with the flooding and deaths and whatnot.
Makes this post seem a little insensitive. Sorry about that. I’d been kind of news free for a few days.
