Patrick Wilson: King of Castration is ‘Barry Munday’

Patrick Wilson is having trouble with his balls again. Those of you who saw Hard Candy may recall a certain scene involving all manner of horrifying genital hijinks on the part of Mr. Wilson’s pedophile character.

Now, in the dark romantic comedy Barry Munday, he’s set to play a womanizer who wakes up in the hospital following an assault to find they had to remove his testicles. What’s more, it turns out a brief fling he had with Judy Greer has led to a paternity suit.

Based upon the 2003 novel Life is a Strange Place by Frank Turner Holion, Barry Munday will also star Chloe Sevigny, Cybil Shepherd and Billy Dee Williams.

Aside from wondering if Patrick Wilson worries about being typecast as a eunuch, the real reason I bring this up is because I’ve had a crush on Judy Greer since she played Deadly Girl in The Specials. Right now I’m laughing quietly to my self thinking of her as Kitty in Arrested Development. “Take a good look Michael, ’cause it’s the last time you’re ever gonna see these!

  1. Heh heh, no actress has ever single-handedly flashed as many people on network television as Judy Greer.

  2. Patrick Wilson seems to be a good enough actor. I enjoyed him in Little Children. However, Hard Candy is definitely in my Top 5 Most Hated Movies list (along with The Human Stain). The writing, storyline, dialogue, and acting in Candy was god-awful. I really hate Ellen Page’s acting style and coupled with the lines she was given in Hard Candy made me want to shoot myself. Ok…sorry. I’m done ranting.

  3. Wow, he’s “The Guy” in Hard Candy? Yeah, I never saw it, and never made that connection. I’ve only seen him in The Alamo (don’t remember him) and Little Children (thought he was great). The cast for Barry Munday sounds like a mixed-bag of old friends. Could be good.

  4. Billy Dee Williams!

  5. No way this doesn’t screen at Sundance. And I don’t mean that in a good way.

  6. I enjoyed Hard Candy very much. Enjoyed it. Yeah that is sick and twisted, but I belong to that club so it is not a problem.

I thought Patrick was great in Hard Candy, I didn’t it it was him then…and great in Little Children and not even awful in Evening.

Judy Greer, she was in “The TV Set” which I have not seen. I want to though. She was hilarious in, um, 13 Going On 30.

So Barry Munday could be a great, imo.

  7. Nick, I loved “Hard Candy” too, I thought Ellen Page should have gotten an Oscar nomination. But my favorite thing Wilson has done is “Angels in America.”

  8. “Flashes of Quincy!”
Ah, Arrested Development, how I love thee.

The ‘castration’ scene in Hard Candy definitely goes down as one of the most flinch-inducing moments in film, right up there with the curb-stomp in American History X, the tooth extraction in Marathon Man, and that beam nailing the oil well worker in the head in There Will Be Blood. Flinch, flinch, flinch.

And yes, Matthew, Ellen Page should have been nominated for Hard Candy. I was irate with all the people who called Juno her ‘breakout role.’

  9. She should have got an Oscar nom for Hard Candy, but got one for her second best performance.

I forgot about Angels in America. No seriously, I have no recollection of it, except for bits and pieces. I know now that have long term memory loss.

  10. Just wanted to chime in with some Ellen Page support. I loved Hard Candy as well. Thought she was absolutely brill and DEFINITELY deserved an Oscar nod. When I walked into Juno for the first time, I was well aware of what she was capable of - and she did not disappoint.

    The girl has serious chops…

  11. I agree with everyone about Ellen Page. She definitely has the chops.

And I also loved Hard Candy. But, like Nick, I’m somewhat twisted.

I liked Kusturica’s Arizona Dream, which is a movie people either love or hate. Black humor appeals to me.

  12. Neither of you went further with the “chops” joke, there? >-)

  13. Little innocent old us, Daniel? ;-)

  14. Alison, I think you meant to say you agree with everyone except Justin. :-)

Chloe Sevigny? Cybil Shepherd? Billy Dee Williams?

    What a fascinating mix.

  15. It’s been a long time since I saw Billy Dee Williams. And I do like Chloe Sevigny. Cybil Shepherd, not so much.

But I agree, Alexander. It is a fascinating mix.

  16. Thought Page and Wilson outstanding in Hard Candy, particularly the former. And Patrick Wilson’s performance in Little Children was perfect for the character.

“Black humor appeals to me.” One of the many things we enjoy about you.

  17. I have loved Chloe Sevigny for ages. I wish she would get a great role like she had in “Boys Don’t Cry”, she is good in TVs “Big Love” too, even if her beauty is down-played a bit.

  18. Wilson has also been cast as the Nite Owl in the upcoming Watchmen adaption, which is probably appropriate since that character (as Moore wrote him) is fairly emasculated, which I suppose is another form of castration.

But otherwise, Wilson looks nothing like what I imagined that character to be.

That may have taken us to tangentville.

  19. There’s a million stories in tangentville. Your’s Joel, is but one.

For those interested, here is a link to the Watchmen film website that includes a photo of Wilson in Nite Owl apparel.

My personal favorite among the Watchmen is Rorschach.

  20. Thanks for the link, Wilson looks so different in that pic! Really cool stuff though.

    RANDOM ALERT: I miss Serena

  21. Rumor has it, that may be her playing Silk Spectres.

  22. I think the cast looks interesting, though there’s really no telling how it will turn out in the end. I didn’t read the book, but if it’s super dark and a little twisted, it’s got a chance to be good.

Plus, did I mention I have a crush on Judy Greer?

  23. Craig, between you and me, our list of “crushes” is never ending. Mine isn’t anyway.

  24. At least we have excellent taste, Nick my friend.

  25. Wilson was also in little children, which had castration in it. That’s 3 Movies!!!!!

  26. Hahahahah, I hadn’t even thought of that Mikey. I wonder if it’s in his contract.
