Friday Filler: LiC is One

Against all odds, Living in Cinema turns one year old this month. Technically, the first post was on April 17th so it’s still a few days off, but we’re close enough to one trip around the sun to make this a good time to pause and reflect on where LiC has been and to think about where it should go in the future.
In retrospect, the original concept was a little fuzzy. I knew what I didn’t want it to be - no gossip, no box office and no bullshit - but I didn’t have a clear idea of what shape it would take. I wanted it to be an engaging place for thoughtful people to come and share their enthusiasm for movies, but making that a reality has proven an experimental process and continues to be a work in progress.
Originally, I didn’t conceive of LiC as a daily venture. I was aiming for quality over quantity and felt that 3 or 4 posts a week would suffice. Well, that’s officially out the window now. I’ve managed to post daily since 2008 began and that’s going to be the status quo going forward. That means some longer items with shorter items continuing to pop up to fill in the cracks. I want the focus to be on longer items however, particularly reviews, so from now on I want to do at least 2 or 3 reviews of new movies a week or maybe some combination of new and old releases. I’d always intended to do more classic reviews, but have never managed to get it off the ground.
As for the shorter posts, these are shaping up to be news items or new information about upcoming films. I’d never intended to cover this stuff, but a healthy comments section makes it viable. Don’t think of LiC as a source of news, mainly I’ll be passing along stories culled from the trades. Consider this a place to chat when something interesting happens in the movie world, as always 100% Varietese free.
What movies will be covered continues to be an open question. Initially my own personal interests limited what I wrote about, but as assorted publicists catch on to the fact that me and the monkeys are slowly taking over the Internet, they’re starting to send updates about this or that project. To the extent a certain film seems to fit into LiC, I’ll pass the info along. My hope is to focus more on films that need the attention, but the occasional blockbuster will slip through.
It seems like I had more to say than that, but I think that about covers it. Before I officially begin the weekend, I’d like to say thank you to all of the commenters who make this a better blog than it has any right to be and I’d also like to thank the silent types who don’t have anything to share, but who check in anyway. You all make this a lot more fun than talking to myself.

Happy birthday to LiC, happy… birthday dear LiC, happy birthday to you.
Happy birthday! And congrats on reaching a year running this wonderful blog. :-)
btw, my birthday is in about two weeks (April 28th). Showering me with gifts is okay. ;-)
Happy birthday and hugs to you all :-) Congrats, Craig!
Happy birthday! Nice to have you around- you’ve become one of my regular blogosphere destinations. Here’s to another year of excellence, and more besides.
Only boys who save their pennies make your rainy day, Alison.
This blog is always jumping.
Happy Birthday, LiC. You should be a proud papa, Craig.
Excellent work, Craig. I think the success of the blog is attributable to your attitude in shaping it and the discussion within, and the tone you set. Thanks much for the space and for your particular voice and opinions.
Yay, Happy Almost B-day LiC!!!
This is so cool….it feels like just yesterday I first visited your place Craig, and it is not like I am leaving any time soon.
Thank you all very much. Again. I tell my self of a cold dark night that I’d be doing this whether you were here or not, but that’s just a lie to help me go back to sleep.
Is there still room for me to squeeze into the front row here and throw flowers and unmentionables onto the stage?
Living in Cinema remains the only completely independent movie site/blog that I enjoy every day in every way. Yes, my name is Daniel, and I’m an LiC addict.
I have to say, Craig, the worst part about your daily posting is that it requires a distracting amount of time for me to read, write, and ponder everyone else’s thoughts (in addition to yours, which are always fresh, never frozen). The current Coen bros. thread carried by Joel and others is a perfect example. I can only hope all of my fellow commenters don’t start their own blogs because I’ll literally never get anything done again.
Keep up the great work, and best success as it continues to grow and you attract attention from more publicists and decision makers in Hollywood. I’d rather you be a guiding voice than anyone else.
Time. Files.
Wow, Craig, I hadn’t even thought about it. Amazing how far it’s come in a year and I’m so glad to have this refuge when many of my favorite film sites have either taken a turn for the worse in the last six months or have lovely posts but don’t have such a wonderful discourse going on around them.
And thanks to all of you for showing up here, schooling me on film, and being such thoughtful commentators. I’ve said it before, but the site wouldn’t the same without the folks who hang out here.
Here’s to hoping the newest recent visitors find some shelter here and become part of the regular crew.
Hartelijk Gefeliciteerd :-)
So, when’re we getting LiC T-shirts?
Also, I haven’t been reading the Coen thread, but I’ll get to that as soon as I get back from Oslo. Which is cool, btw, And many stores have an amazing DVD selection…but the cheapest you can find is about 100 kroner. Which is a bit more than 13 euro. And 20 dollars, which makes it seem like an insane amount I counted down for The Lady Eve (but it was worth it)
Anyway, the site is great and keeps getting greater, so here’s to many more years!
Awww, my sweet crab boy…
I thought it was getting to be around that time. But I didn’t know the exact date.
Here’s to you and your splendid movie blog, LIVING IN CINEMA. It is an oasis in cyberspace for those of us who love film and live to discuss it - with various likeminded types that are every bit as brilliant, witty, elegant and eloquent as you yourself are, Monsieur K.
Long may LiC reign. It’s the coolest place ever. Someday everyone will know that.
Cheers to you and the fabulous future that awaits you, my darling…
Congrats, Craig. This is one of the best movie blogs out there and I’m glad it’s going well. I like the filtering of news topics because frankly, they’re not all interesting. And when I’m in need for some flat out news, I go to one of the bigger sites. But that’s one of the things that makes LiC so special, the commenting. The other sites get drowned in comments, and most of them are just stupid, one-off remarks. Here, there is intelligent and thoughtful contributions to the topic at hand. I love it. 4 more years!
Well done sir.
Thank you all. I should turn one every couple of weeks.
