Ryan and the Real Screenwriter

You wouldn’t have known it from the breathless media coverage, but more than one woman received an Oscar nomination for screenwriting last year. It’s just that two of them didn’t get to play the tattooed former stripper card.

I mention all of this now because our friend Ryan Adams of Awards Daily recently conducted a phone interview with Nancy Oliver, the Oscar nominated screenwriter of Lars and the Real Girl. As an unabashed fan of both Lars and Ryan, I wanted to let you know.

 Check it out.

  1. That podcast was awesome. :-)

I like the title of the post too, he he.

  2. So Ryan’s a real live boy. With a voice and opinions and taste and everything.

    Will wonders never cease?

  3. Wasn’t it fantastic to experience an interview conducted with such intelligence, and heart for the writer’s material? So rarely happens.

  4. I wasn’t a fan of the movie but I am excited that Awardsdaily and Ryan are expanding into new realms.

  5. I think it is totally great, I am so thrilled for Ryan.

  6. Very cool. Nancy Oliver received basically zero attention thanks to Cody. I wouldn’t mind if Lars went on to be remembered as the better movie, but I’m sure that won’t happen.

  7. I wouldn’t blame Cody for Oliver being snubbed. That is owed more to the fact that the Oscars are a political masquerade. Both are good screenplays, both deserved recognition, Cody got the upper hand because Oscar likes an underdog story, plain and simple.

  8. Sorry, Evan. If I see a chance to blame Cody for anything, I take it. >-P

    No offense, Nick and others!

  9. Evan: Exactly. That’s why Jennifer Hudson won for Dreamgirls. Granted that role is awards bait and she’s a fabulous singer. But the whole American Idol hooplah/Cinderella story appealed to the Academy, which gave her a huge advantage.

  10. ryan interviewing nancy is the most important film related ‘event’ of the year. :)

  11. To be fair, Juno hit theaters with far more hype and enthusiasm than a movie like Lars. If Diablo Cody wasn’t a persona designed to be consumed by the media like a seven-course meal, neither she nor Oliver would have garnered much attention.

The Oscars seem to be about 90% hype and momentum, 10% honest appraisal of artistic ability.

Regardless, nice to see Oliver getting some attention for such an odd concept as Lars, which works in spite of itself. Testament to good work being done by the writer, director, producers, and actors.

  12. For all their faults, AMPAS deserve considerable credit for their last two best picture choices, and for nominating as challenging a film as TWbB.

  13. Word, sartre. The last two best picture choices were on the money, and Scorsese finally got his due. And I never expected TWBB to be nominated, and in so many categories.

  14. If Diablo Cody wasn’t a persona designed to be consumed by the media like a seven-course meal, neither she nor Oliver would have garnered much attention.

uh joel… i think the better slant would be lars would have got more attention if everyone (well you know what i mean) wasn’t cody/juno crazy. and it’s chances for that oscar when would have been much better too.

anyway…backlash…. ???? not as good ???? more of the same ?????

cody newish screen play doesn’t have many..translation almost no votes ??? on the unproduced blacklist screeplay list. hmm……

  15. I don’t blame Cody at all. I blame the media.
I think AMPAS did a fine job in nominating Cody, Jenkins and Oliver, but it irritates me Cody got all the attention. It’s not her fault.

  16. That’s what i was trying to get at Craig, but you summed it far more simply than I. I do admire/resent Cody in equal amounts for the fine job she did building her image and hype prior to the movie coming out and you have to credit that with a LOT of the focus that was put on her.

The media LOVES a story that’s already written for them.

I hesitate to say this, but I’m afraid Cody inadvertently drank Oliver’s milkshake. (que drum strike)

Glimmer, yep, I see what you’re getting at. Were it to come out in a different year, the Real Girl would have dominated the awards simply because of Bianca. (heh heh)

  17. A good interview. Can’t say I liked her film very much but this was interesting and I too am glad to see Awards Daily branch out in new and daring ways.

  18. Daniel, I hold you personally responsible for Oliver’s woes. :)

“I hesitate to say this, but I’m afraid Cody inadvertently drank Oliver’s milkshake.”
That, Joel, is a very funny observation. Reminds me of something I overheard at the office, which is appropros to the Juno discussion.

    “No Country For Hamburger Phone”

I have no idea what the context was, but it made my day.
