Almodóvar and Cruz Together Again

Penélope Cruz © Pedro Almodóvar
Repeating information gleaned from Pedro Almodóvar’s blog and elsewhere, The Guardian reports that filming begins next month on Almodóvar’s latest collaboration with supernaturally beautiful Penélope Cruz called Los Abrazos Rotos (Broken Embraces).
Planning to shoot in the “style of 50s film noir,” the director calls it “the longest script I’ve ever written.”
In his blog entry Titles and Hairstyles, Almodóvar says of Woody Allen’s latest film Vicky Christina Barcelona (starring Cruz) “I’ve got no right to stick my nose into other people’s business, but someone should tell my adored Woody Allen that the title of his ‘Spanish’ film doesn’t mean anything in Spanish. In my humble opinion, it isn’t a good or bad title, it’s a non-title.” He should talk to Jeff Wells.
Meanwhile he’s got some good test shots of Cruz hairstyles, including the one above.
Was this the weakest excuse to run a picture of Penélope you’ve ever read? Is that a problem?

Almodóvar plus Cruz equals definitely seeing the film.
Though the Cruz film I’m really looking forward to is Nine. Cruz plus Bardem plus Cotillard equals Hotness. And it’s a great show, which will hopefully be translated to a great film. Rob Marshall of Chicago fame is the director, so it’s in good hands at least. :-)
News of another Cruz and Almodovar film is great news. Their last collaboration, “Volver”, was one of the best films of ‘06 and Cruz gave the best performance of anyone that year, male or female. Amazing film. Can’t wait to see “Broken Embraces”
In the “style of 50s film noir”…..
Yes, please.
Ari: Word on your Volver comments.
Word to both Ari and Alison’s posts. As for Craig: It’s a perfectly good excuse to run the post. Thanks for sharing.
The picture excuse would only be obvious had you used a still from the dishwashing scene in Volver.
Word on all five posts in this thread thus far.
Volver, I think, more than any Almodovar film, ages better and better with each viewing. I’m starting to think it’s actually his masterpiece. (Well, it at least joins several others as among his masterpieces.) These days it’s my #2 film of ‘06.
Almodovar to make a film with Penelope Cruz in the style of ’50s noir?
This is like a huge birthday present four and a half months early.
I loved Volver, so I am in for anything the two do in the future. Cruz was amazing in Volver, my attitude towards her as an actress changed dramatically after seeing it.
Yeah, they pretty much had me at Almodovar and Cruz. Throw in 50s Noir and this jumps up to one of my most anticipated upcoming movies.
His blog is kind of cool by the way. Supposedly he’s going to be regularly updating his thoughts during the making of the film.
Penelope really is old star gorgeous, and Almodovar, so far, is the only director who seems to really be able to get that perfect movie version of her on the screen.
Looking forward to this.
no not a weak excuse. a pretty good one/ nice info to absorb…
uh is that a recent photo ???
and i love the thta allen’s spanish film title/means nothing in spanish. that’s beyond brilliant….. :)
Incredibly exciting. Almodovar and Cruz generally translates into perfection. And I agree about Cruz in “Volver.” Terrific performance that reminded me how great an actress she is when given the right material.
The film noir reference got me a wee worried, though; Almodovar’s “Carne Tremula” from years back (starring Javi) is not one of my favorites. A “serious” Pedro takes some getting used to.
