Scott and Affleck Attached to ‘The Kind One’

Variety reports that Ridley Scott will direct and produce The Kind One starring Casey Affleck as an amnesiac in 1930s Los Angeles who ends up working for a mobster. It’s based on a novel by Tom Epperson who will also write the screenplay.

I’m on the fence about Scott, but after The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford I’m a convert to the cult of Casey Affleck and a ’30s Los Angeles milieu is intriguing.

No telling where this will fit in between Nottingham and Blood Meridian.

  1. What was I writing about with regards to Ridley Scott in that Suburbicon thread? pats himself on the back

This guy seems determined to have the most movies in development at the same time in Hollywood history. Sports fans–”Can he do it?!”

I do become instantly skeptical about contemporary movies with amnesiacs at their center, though, unless they are directed by Christopher Nolan and/or starring Guy Pearce.

  2. I thought of you as soon as I read the Variety article.

Tomorrow they’ll probably announce another Spielberg project…

  3. Haha, fingers crossed.

  4. I don’t the question is can he do it, because Ridley pumps movies out pretty regularly these days. He and his brother must have a running competition. Question is, will any of them be worth your time?

  5. Um…NO.

  6. In the case of Casey (now that’s a mouthful), my feeling is that, in order to have a sustained career of good roles, he’ll need to be thoughtful about which ones he accepts. This is true for actors in general but moreso for Casey, I think. His range doesn’t seem that broad and he could easily fall into a repetitive or downward-sloping rut. With his talent, he deserves more.

  7. Casey will not be a star if Miranda has anything to do with it. :)

Me, I think he could have a fine career as a character actor, but not necessarily the leading man type. And I mean that as the highest form of compliment because so often the most interesting roles aren’t the romantic leads.

  8. Hey, don’t pin that on me, Monsieur Kennedy. Mr. Affleck all ready has an Oscar nomination so that buys him a huge amount of street cred.

What Pierre says is absolutely true, as always.

    *Clean getaway. Unlike the Coens.*

  9. I’m just saying you wouldn’t shed a tear if he crashed and burned.
