‘Changeling’ to Play Cannes

The full lineup for Cannes ‘08 will be announced soon, but it looks like Clint Eastwood’s Changeling with Angelina Jolie will join Woody Allen’s Vicky Christina Barcelona with Penelope Cruz, Scarlett Johansson and Javier Bardem as representatives from the United States.

Variety is also reporting that Barry Levinson’s What Just Happened? may not be the closing film as had been previously announced. The Hollywood satire starring Robert De Niro, Bruce Willis, Stanley Tucci and John Turturro was pretty heavily slammed by critics when it played at Sundance.

Festival programmers also seem to be clinging to the slim hope that Steven Soderbergh will still be able to show his Che Guevara films, The Argentine and Guerilla in some form whether they’re technically finished or not.

  1. Interesting bits about Eastwood and Allen.

This Cannes line-up is the most interesting, across the board, I think, in three years.

What Just Happened? has been kicked around by just about everybody who has seen it thus far. Too bad. I’ve honestly never been much of a Levinson fan but even I keep thinking he’ll do better than he’s done in the last decade.

    In more provincial sports news…

    YEAH, SHARKS!!!!!

  2. I cannot wait to hear the full lineup, but Changeling and Vicky sound interesting as well as Soderbergh’s Che films.

  3. I have not seen any of the Dardennes’ films, feel free to scold me. I’m wary of new-school Eastwood, but his legacy is such that I’ll never not see one of his films, either in front or behind the camera. The premise could be shaky and nasty, though I’m guessing it’ll lean more to toward the ponderous. We’ll see.

Allen could do twenty terrible, terrible pictures in a row and I’d greet the release of the next with just as much giddy anticipation, he deserves the faith and the cred. Allen has been criticized for making some bad or mediocre films, but I respect the apparently self-conscious free compulsion to make a film, or two, nearly ever year. The man is a FILMMAKER.

And I liked Scoop, sue me.

  4. I’m almost with you on Allen, Chuck. It’s trendy to hate on him, but he’s a giant. I liked Match Point - what does that make me?

I’m a little skeptical about Soderbergh loading up on Che, but I’ll see ‘em in any form.

  5. >.I’m wary of new-school Eastwood,

Don’t be such a pompous jerk, Chuck.

    >.Allen could do twenty terrible, terrible pictures in a row

loL, I think your wish has been granted!
