‘Nine’ minus Javier Bardem
Earlier in April, Javier Bardem dropped out of Francis Ford Coppola’s Tetro and now, citing exhaustion from work and awards season, Variety is reporting that he’s also leaving Nine, Rob Marshall’s musical adaptation of Fellini’s 8 1/2.
The actor, who recently won an Academy Award for his portrayal of Anton Chigurh in Joel and Ethan Coen’s No Country For Old Men, may take as much as a year off “to recharge his batteries.”
He’s already completed work on Woody Allen’s Vicky Christina Barcelona with Penelope Cruz and the film is set to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.

If Javier HAD to drop out of NINE, then I hope to hell that ANTONIO BANDERAS (who really should’ve been offered that part in the first place - and I say that as someone who ADORES Javier) will be cast now.
*fingers crossed*
That’s really too bad! I so was looking forward to seeing Javier in this role! I guess that means he’ll be spending time away from Penelope Cruz since she’s still in it! Makes you wonder.
Thanks for stopping by Lucy. Sorry your comment got held up in moderation so long.
Being the 2nd movie in a row he’s bailed on, I hope he’s ok.
I don’t know much about Nine, but being a musical Antonio would be kind of perfect Miranda.
Thank you, Miranda! I was going to suggest Antonio Banderas. He played the role on Broadway.
Not that I don’t love Javi. But Miranda is right - Antonio performed this on Broadway, why not offer him the role in the film as well?
He’s a bigger name too.
Up until this year’s Oscars, definitely.
Banderas was wonderful in the Broadway production, btw.
I KNOW, Alison.
From what I understand the late RAUL JULIA (God I miss him, he was fantastic) and the late ANITA MORRIS (same deal - she was scorchingly sexy and immensely talented) were on fire in the original Broadway production of NINE. People STILL talk about their excellence on stage. Apparently they just laid people out in their seats. Night after night.
Antonio was, as you said, in the revival. I can’t think of anyone who would be more perfect for this project than him. He was very good in EVITA. He has a real elegance to him. He sings and dances well. He’s gloriously handsome. Has a ton of charisma. If NINE hits big, he may even get an Oscar nomination out of it.
HE SHOULD HAVE THAT PART. Is Rob Marshall attached to this project or was that just a rumour?
Anyone have any idea? Craig?
Rob Marshall is very much attached to this project, Miranda.
I hope Javier Bardem is all right. He’s always seemed extremely hesitant to ever make choices that would help him become a big star, at least as a raison d’etre. He’s quite picky and perhaps he just didn’t think he was right for this. Who knows? (At least for now.)
Thanks, Alexander…
I think Alexander hit the nail on the head!
I have a feeling Javier got cold feet about the singing and the dancing.Although,he did sing in one of his films and he wasn’t that bad.Of course Antonio would be perfect but I wonder how he feels about not being considered for the role first.I heard he was great on stage and he’s a great actor too but I guess this is meant to be.Maybe Javier wouldn’t have been right for the part just as Antonio could have never played Anton Chigurh. Thanks guys!
I love musicals, but I’ve never seen Nine. I am deeply fond of 8 1/2, though, so I’m pretty optimistic.
I wonder if Penelope will drop out too, and they rush off to tie the knot! Seriously, I love Javier in everything I’ve seen him in, (I haven’t had a crush in years, but I’ve got a whopper now!) and he would have been fine (there are already blogs about Scarlett’s lack of singing ability, but her beauty will carry her through). They say he didn’t want to do No Country because he was concerned about his accent. I sure hope this isn’t a case of cold feet, and hope he feels much better soon!
I am with you there jennybee, I love 8 1/2, so it will be very interesting.
Has anyone seen this from Variety? I would die if it was true.
I haven’t had time to keep up with the news today. I don’t know the stage production, but lock me in for whatever DDL wants to do next. He’s going to read the ingredient lists off the back of shampoo bottles? Sign me up.
I drink your Pantene!
lol, Jeff.
It’s been all over the internet and it looks like Daniel Day-Lewis is going to replace Javier Bardem in Nine! I wonder why Antonio Banderas wasn’t considered for the role.Anyway,Bardem is doing just fine, saw some photos of him looking very cute with his sister Monica
on the street in Madrid.
It does seem strange there has not been talk of Banderas Lucy, but maybe he just wasn’t available or interested for some reason. Surely he’s a bigger name than Bardem was.
Maybe Banderas is a bigger name, but not a bigger talent.Javier Bardem is a great actor and let’s face it, he did win that Oscar! I’m glad he didn’t pack his bags and move to the US (and I am American) to star in some lame, computer generated action flick! While I do like Antonio a lot,I lost a little respect for him when he left Spain and married Melanie Griffith.
But wouldn’t it be nice if he and Bardem made a film in Spain together? Now THAT would be big!
Yes, Javier looks fine in those pictures with his sister.
Maybe he decided that the music in Nine wasn’t his thing. As far as Tetro goes, I heard that it is a mess so I am sure he is happy he dropped out of that one. I am sure that he will carefully chose his next film. And, yes,
he doesn’t seem to be a Hollywood star.
Daniel Day-Lewis is great but I don’t know about him for Nine. I wonder why they didn’t ask Banderas to play that part because he already did it on Broadway.
