Lynch + Herzog: The Mind Reels
Posted on May 15th, 2008 by Craig Kennedy
No cinematic pun intended…well maybe a little. This one tried to sneak past without my noticing it, but luckily Sartre brought it to my attention. It seems David Lynch and Werner Herzog are going to team up on a “horror-tinged murder drama” called My Son, My Son. It’s loosely based on the true story of a man with Sophocles on the brain who kills his mother with a sword.
What is described as a low-budget, “guerrilla-style digital video shoot” is set for next March.
Herzog is scheduled to begin filming his Bad Lieutenant remake in July and The Piano Tuner in the fall.

I’ve got to admit, the idea of Herzog making three films back-to-back-to-back sounds kind of implausible. Has he done anything like that before?
Just the fact that there’s word of a new Lynch project, finally, has me excited. Throw Herzog in and… Wow. The two craziest directors on earth making a film together? Will they kill each other? Will the film make the least bit of sense? Will I care? (No, I just wanna see it.)
“Just the fact that there’s word of a new Lynch project, finally, has me excited.” exactly.
I don’t know about Herzog. My Son sounds like it will be a breeze, but The Piano Tuner could be arduous. Then again, he’s a guy who likes to test limits.
It all sounds pretty exciting to me

Good family fun!

Agreed.
Interesting combination.
I had the same question as Alexander. It seems odd that Herzog would do 3 films back to back.
do we need a remake of Bad Lieutenant ???
what name/semi name male ’star’ is wanting to do this role ???
glimmer: Nicholas Cage.
Well, one thing’s for sure: this movie will be interesting. What else it will be…I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
Can’t…process…my…head…
Some reports are that Lynch is only producing. If that’s the way the THR article is meant to be read, it’s highly misleading…and more than a little disappointing.
Love Herzog, but my main interest in this story is Lynch.
hi alison !!!! :)
nic cage. hmm he hasn’t done anything with bit more seriuos/art slant in awhile..
but when i think of nic now i think of thus tidbit that popped up in a review of the second national treasure movie in the village voice..
National Treasure: Book of Secrets is actually quite entertaining. Perhaps not so much if you still think of Nicolas Cage as a serious method actor, but if you’ve learned to enjoy his current incarnation of shticks and tics—bugging out his eyes, smiling creepily at inappropriate moments, and RANDOMLY SHOUTING certain words for NO APPARENT REASON—Jon Turteltaub’s movie is for you.
*ha ha*
and yeah hedwig….interesting…let’s keep our fingers crossed
That is disappointing, if true, Craig.
C’mon, Werner’s taking on three projects in the next ten months and David just sits around and produces? Oh well.
I kept thinking, though, that films that are co-directed usually don’t end up being so hot. The idea of one co-directed by two such exacting and respectively creatively brilliant giants was almost too much to believe anyway.
Still looking forward to The Piano Turner and whatever Herzog does next, and I wish Lynch would go back to directing sometime in the not so distant future.
I’m surprised that some of you are so surprised that Herzog would make three pictures in a row. Looking at his IMDB page, it seems like constantly working is kind of his MO. Did the man not just make 6 films in 4 years?
True, alynch, but looking at his IMDB page it seems like many of those films are documentaries, which tend to be more quickly made than narrative feature films, which these three will be. There’s no question, though, that making documentaries, can be quite taxing, too, and Herzog is a human fireball of energy.
