How Many Polish Brothers Does it Take…

…to form a production company?

Two if they’re Mark and Michael Polish, the identical twin writing-directing-producing (and sometimes starring) brother team behind such enigmatic films as Twin Falls Idaho, Northfork and the more recent (and more mainstream) The Astronaut Farmer.

According to Variety’s Michael Flemming, the two have formed Prohibition Pictures with the aim of producing four indie films a year. They’ve already put together financing for the first two films, co-written by them, and to be shot back to back beginning next week.

First up is Manure, a comedy about a manure salesman in the 1960s starring Billy Bob Thornton, Tea Leoni and Kyle MacLachlan(!) and, after that, they’ll begin filming the comedy Stay Cool starring Winona Ryder, Sean Astin and Chevy Chase.

  1. I guess I should get back in touch with the amazing Polish brothers.
I went to high school with them.

  2. Were they ‘enigmatic’?

  3. I said hi to them at the Mill Valley Film Festival when they showed that Billy Bob Thornton-Virginia Madsen movie. Pretty cool how they’re doin’ the whole production company thing.

  4. They were nice guys. Low-key. The class below me. My friend went with one to the prom. We had another set of twins in our class.

  5. It’s good to know they’re doing well. I’m quite fond of them (especially Northfork), and I thought they might have some trouble getting films made after the astronaut film tanked.
