Abrams is a sucker for a mystery
The love for JJ Abrams approaches Whedonesque or Apatowian heights in some quarters, but LiC is not one of them. Then again, I’m a mystery-puzzle nerd so the news yesterday that Mr. Abrams would be producing a movie based on this NY Times story by Penelope Green caught my attention.
The short of it is that a couple hired an architect to renovate their $8.5 million 1920s Upper East Side apartment. Over a period of years, he embedded the redesign with all sorts of puzzles and clues that ultimately formed a kind of scavenger hunt, complete with its own soundtrack. Then he sat back and waited for them to discover it.
First of all, being rich would rule. Second, people who are rich who aren’t me suck. Third, though this has the makings of a lovely family movie, it’s mostly cool because it’s something that would only happen in a movie but it happened in real life. To put that back in a movie kind of takes some of the magic out of it.
The script will be written by Maya Forbes and Wally Wolodarsky who also wrote the upcoming Rainn Wilson comedy The Rocker and the much buzzed about 3-D animated film Monsters vs. Aliens.
Wes Anderson fans may remember Wolodarsky as Brendan the organizer in The Darjeeling Limited or as the referee in Rushmore or as the salesman in Life Aquatic. Or they might not.
Really, the only reason I posted this is because I thought the NY Times story was cool.

Weird. Cool.
Your third point hits it - it is something that would only happen in a movie.
“First of all, being rich would rule. Second, people who are rich who aren’t me suck.”
Brilliant.
Daniel, Yes, and having something that would only happen in a movie…happen in a movie…isn’t quite as cool.
Sartre, I take it you’re not rich?
I had to work REALLY hard to remember this Wolodarsky guy from any of those movies. Clearly, his roles were small before Darjeeling.
I am meh on the movie though. Sounds like something better left as an article or a small portion of a complete story.
Not rich, not poor.
Wolodarsky is also famous for being a Simpsons writer/producer and directing the classic film Sorority Boys.
I’ve been eagerly awaiting the Criterion SE of Sorority Boys.
When Wes Anderson did a Q&A with Roman Coppola after the Darjeeling screening I saw, they dragged Wally out and this seemed to make the audience very happy.
The Rocker might actually be kind of funny.
Not to worry, Craig. You will be rich one day. You’re going to have so much bloody money you’ll be able to decorate the house with it.
But, in the meantime, you don’t have to be. I admire you for the fine qualities that you possess, you (presently) non-rich boy, you.
Hah….I was just at CP. Great minds think alike…even when one of them is poor.
Now, now…
