LAFF 2008: Day 10 - Part 2

The Los Angeles Film Festival Audience Awards were handed out last night.

Audiences chose The Wackness as Best Narrative Feature, Anvil! The Story of Anvil as Best Documentary Feature and Man on Wire as Best International Feature.

I didn’t catch the Anvil documentary because it played too far away from Westwood, but Man on Wire was the best movie I saw all week. I enjoyed The Wackness, but Best Narrative Feature? That’s stretching it.

  1. Nothing for LA FRANCE or PRINCE OF BROADWAY? That’s too bad…………but still great that MAN ON WIRE won that international prize and that THE WACKNESS won the narrative feature citation. (even if that may have been stretching it as you state.)
I don’t think anyone could have eclipsed you in terrific writing and stellar attendance for over a week. Congratulations.

  2. The Wackness is a crowd-pleaser so it makes sense the crowd went for it.

Thanks for enjoying the coverage Sam. I did the best I could, though it turns out having a full-time job in addition to blogging is not conducive to reporting. Nevertheless, it was good practice for a future Toronto or Sundance or SXSW.

  3. Craig, you’re an inspiration to us all. Being self-employed, I don’t even have a full-time job per se, and I don’t manage to see a fraction of the movies you do or blog nearly as often or articulately. Thanks a bunch for all your hard work building, maintaining and nurturing this site, seriously. Have a virtual hug from someone who wishes she were as smart and talented as you. (That’s me, by the way. In case that wasn’t clear.)

  4. Thanks a lot JB, coming from you that means a ton. Based on everything you’ve written here and elsewhere, you’re selling your intelligence and articulateness (articulence? articuality? articulatamatopoeia?) very short though. You’re a smartipants and the secret is out.

  5. See? Articulatamatopoeia just made me snort soup out my nose. You rock. I only emulate the greats.

  6. You’re kind of a suck up when you’re sick! I like it. But get well soon anyway. :)

  7. YOU ALL ROCK AND I BOW DOWN TO YOUR AWESOMENESS.

Does typing things out in caps make it come across any clearer? Not sure, but its true.

I wanna see “The Wackness” already….I just love that kinda stuff.

  8. I think you’ll dig The Wackness, Nick. In the parlance of the movie, it’s the dopeness. Also, it’s got Olivia Thirlby and I know you and I both agree that’s a good thing.

I don’t think it’s “best of festival” material, but that’s not a criticism at all.

  9. Hell yeah its a good thing. One thing we more than agree on is the young, particularly female, talent at the moment. Think Diaz, Rachel Wood, Page… And I, for one, think we have great taste.

Whether or not it deserved to win the Narrative award, I would not know, so I’ll trust you. It doesn’t seem like the kind of film that would deserve to win, and I am only going on your word on some of the other films up for the prize, but it does seem to have that audience appeal, a lighter less demanding tone overall, and I guess I understand why it won. I think.

  10. Yeah, lighter in tone. There was some pretty heavy, amazing stuff. The Wackness was fun, though not terribly deep.

And yeah, we do have pretty immaculate taste. :)

  11. No, Prince of Broadway won

  12. Yes, Prince of Broadway won the jury prize which I noted in Part 1, but The Wackness was chosen by the audience.
