Whedon Takes MGM Out to a ‘Cabin in the Woods’
Buffy The Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon’s thriller script, The Cabin in the Woods co-written with Cloverfield writer Drew Goddard, has been picked up and greenlit by MGM.
Goddard, who will also direct the film, was quoted yesterday by MTV’s Jennifer Vineyard as saying, “It’s genius, it’s funny. It’s got a harder and darker edge, but it’s also got classic Whedon qualities. It’ll rip your heart out and be heartfelt at the same time.” When asked what it was all about, all Goddard would say is: “There’s a reason the title is so straightforward. It’s its own sub-genre, the cabin in the woods, and this is sort of our take on it. It’s fresh and new.”
Whatever it is, Whedonistas the world over are now lactating. Even the boys.

I could care less about what Whedon does. I might watch this if the story sounds interesting but otherwise, I’ll pass.
Whedonistas is some great vocab. Especially because it’s male inclusive.
That’s funny, we *just* finished watching a Buffy episode and I opened my computer and clicked on this. I don’t know if I yet qualify as a Whedonista (and yeah, great neologism), but I do like Buffy. The Serenity movie didn’t do much for me, but I never watched the series.
But horror movies tend to horrify me, so I rarely watch them. We’ll have to see how good or bad this one turns out to be before I decide whether it’s worth watching (on DVD, with the lights on and subtitles, most likely).
Jennybee, if you like Buffy and you have a stomach for sci-fi, then check out the Firefly TV series. I’m one of the rare Whedon fans that thinks the movie kinda sucked a lot of ass, but the TV show was great.
Of course, the TV show is now dead and gone, so watching it now is akin to willingly being tasered, but IT’S WORTH IT. Damn good show in my estimation, unfairly destroyed by the developmentally-challenged ass weasels in Fox’s marketing and programming departments.
Anyway, where was I? Oh yeah, I’m so not excited about this or Whedon’s newest TV series, but lowered expectations are probably perfect.
I don’t qualify as a Whedonista, though I did enjoy Buffy (despite being late to the party). Never watched Angel. Enjoyed the living hell out of Firefly. The movie was ok.
Jennybee, I can’t remember if you saw The Waitress or whether you liked it, but Nathan Fillion, the guy who played the doctor she fell in love with is in Firefly. If you liked him, I double Joel’s recommendation. If you don’t have the slightest idea what I’m talking about, just pretend we never had this conversation but watch Firefly anyway.
As for Whedonistas, I cannot claim to have invented it. You can probably even google it.
Thanks for the recommendation, guys. I should put Firefly on my Netflix list. I loved the heck out of Waitress. Fillion’s been on Desperate Housewives, too, this past season. Don’t tell anyone I watch that, though. l might lose my street cred.
My street cred packed its bags and moved out of town when I watched most of the first season of Ugly Betty.
They’ve been re-running Two guys, a girl, and a pizza place here, and imagine my surprise when I zapped across it and saw… Nathan Fillion. He’s actually almost a regular. Weird: I know I’ve seen some of those episodes, I just didn’t know how he was. And, truth be told, he doesn’t really stand out.
I liked Buffy well enough, but I hated Cloverfield sooooo much that I’m instantly skeptical of this one (and couldn’t they find someone to praise the script besides the guy who co-wrote it?)
I liked Buffy before I realised that I didn’t.
Hardy har har…
You’re such a cutie pie, Nicolas.
“Whedonistas the world over are now lactating.” That’s some startlingly vivid imagery you’ve got there, Mr. Kennedy…
Cloverfield aside, Goddard is a decent writer when the material and characters are already established for him. He’s done good work on Buffy, Angel, Lost and in comic books. Hopefully Whedon was heavily involved in crafting the script and Goddard mostly contributed dialogue and polished set pieces or something.
When you say “polishing set pieces” joel, I imagine him standing on the set with a feather duster, but I’m sure that’s not quite what you meant.
There’s a lot of blame to go around for Cloverfield and without thinking about it too heavily, I’m not sure I’d put most of it at Goddard’s door. I’m not saying I wouldn’t, having thought about it, I’m just saying I don’t know.
Nick, when did Buffy sour on you?
Miranda. Yeah, that was kinda gross in retrospect, wasn’t it?
Hedwig. Two Guys was one of those American sitcoms that actually had moments of goodness, but there was a sense that maybe only one or two people on the team of writers was any good, so for every good line there were 5 boring ones….yet I had a huge crush on the girl and that was enough to get me to watch the whole first half-season. I don’t remember Fillion, but I remember thinking Hey, that Reynolds kid has some talent.
Take everything I just said and apply it to How I Met Your Mother: 1 funny line, 5 bad ones, crush. Same thing.
In my defense, the only TV I have is what the TV gods will let me pull for free from the HD airwaves.
I still sort of like it in a nostalgic kind of way, but was never old enough to care for all 7 seasons of it, I watched on and off for years though.
