Ridley Scott’s ‘Body of Lies’ Trailer

The international trailer for Ridley Scott’s Body of Lies is up on YouTube and you can also download higher resolution copies at the links below. Based on the 2007 novel by Washington Post columnist David Ignatius, Lies stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a CIA agent who goes undercover with a terrorist network in Jordan. Russell Crowe also stars.

If the trailer is an accurate representation of the film (they rarely are), it seems wholy unremarkable to me.

The film scripted by WIlliam Monahan (The Departed) and Steve Zaillian (American Gangster, Schindler’s List) is set to open October 10.

  1. So Ridley has remade his brother’s Spy Game?

  2. Let’s hope it’s better than Spy Game.

  3. terrible

  4. Like his brother, Ridley does have a tendency to favor style over substance, though he’s capable of delivering both.

The trailer naturally emphasizes the flash, but hopefully it’s just exaggerated.

  5. Man, is it me or does this really (shamelessly?) evoke “The Departed”? I mean, down to Leo’s take on his character (and I know this is unfair and premature, after all I’m only basing my opinion on less than 2 minutes of footage, but dayum!). Having said that, I’m so there. lol.

  6. I had the same vibe DP, but I couldn’t tell if it was just because of Leo.

  7. I’m with Dorothy, but it wasn’t Leo that evoked The Departed for me, it was all of the cell-phone cat ‘n mouse games they were playing. Looks like Ridley thinks he replicate Scorsese’s Best Picture winner by having two A listers duke it out over their mobiles.

  8. Or maybe Monahan couldn’t help writing in the same narrative/plot device all over again?

  9. I agree it’s a combination of things; the mobile phones, Leo….Leo’s goatee. All the trailer is missing is a Rolling Stones tune — I’d have used “Monkey Man” and, voila.

  10. I guess “Gimme Shelter” would’ve been TOO much like Departed…

  11. Exactly :) There’s a line, Craig, and that line is “Raaaaaaaaaaaaaape, muuuuuuuuuurder…”

  12. hahahahhaha

Oh..I got chills. Sorry, that’s one of my favorite Stones songs.

  13. One of the greatest moments in rock and roll is when Mary Clayton’s voice cracks, singing her heart out. It’s unreal. By the way, my brother chose that song as the ring tone for incoming calls from me. Love it.

  14. Dude, you do not want to open a Rolling Stones can of worms on a movie blog. We’ll be here alllll day.

Of all the times I’ve heard it live, the backup singers just don’t have that “make the hair on the back of your neck stand up” quality that Clayton had.

Is your brother’s ringtone meant in a positive way or a negative way?

  15. More in an adoring way…I think…I hope! He does have “The Omen” theme as the ringtone for one of our cousins, but that is unquestionably negative. “Gimme Shelter” is a bit of a gray area.

Lucky you to have seen the Stones live! I know you’re a big fan (me, I’m a Beatles fan, but I definitely appreciate the Stone and have a pretty solid collection of their records).

  16. And I appreciate (and love) the Beatles…it’s just not in my blood the same way. People who don’t like one or the other are a little sketchy.

Plus if memory serves you like The Kinks. You pass the LiC test for “good people” with flying colors.

  17. For me, the R&R band trifecta is The Beatles, The Kinks, and Pink Floyd. The Who and The Rolling Stones take up the other two spots.

I totally understand what you mean about it being in your bones — my mom was a huge Beatles fan and indoctrinated me very early on. The Stones where an acquired taste after I got into my late teens.

You’re so right about the divide — for the most part, it’s bs. I’m a big believer in “good music.” I don’t care about the genre (though I gravitate towards R&R and prog rock, I still love salsa and classical music) or the artist and their rep (see my Mamma Mia! comment, lol). You miss out on so much when you’re chained to these artificial barriers. Not to toot my own horn, but my iPod is a smorgasbord of deliciousness.

  18. I used to take pride in my eclectic music selection, but it’s grown stale. I’m pretty out of the loop on new stuff.

I agree about artificial barriers. I’m somewhat guilty of that with movies, but I’m trying to open up. I’d rather be defined by the things I love than by the things I hate.

  19. Having read the screenplay (or rather, an early draft of it), I can say that the film will be much more substantive. The dialogue is similar to The Departed, but not overly so. I used to have a copy, but it was lost when my laptop’s hard drive was replaced.

As for the mobile usage, having read the book, that is apparently not Monohan’s doing. CIA agents (Leo) are often in constant contact with their case officers (Russell) via cell.

  20. It makes perfect sense in the real world, but it’s becoming something of a cliche post 24 and post Bourne. Perhaps people just need to accept it as reality and not as a gimmick.

  21. Maybe they should just text each other instead?

hw d hell DY Xpct me 2 run an op wen ur runN a cYd op, mo fo?

  22. ahahahah

  23. sartre, that’s bloody brilliant. Love it.

  24. I cheated Dorothy. Searched for an online translator and sure enough one existed.

  25. I think it looks good. Maybe not the most ORIGINAL movie, but I’ll be there.

  26. Every time the goddess DOROTHY PORKER returns to LiC it guarantees a fresh POV that I generally identify or agree with.

I adore all the intriguing back and forth regarding THE BEATLES and THE ROLLING STONES. I talked about PRECISELY this subject at my site months ago. These two are my #1 all time favourite band AND #2 all time favourite band. But, depending on the day (and a million other varied circumstances) these two magnificent groups switch back and forth.

I don’t think it’s possible for me to give a definitive answer. If you had A HARD’S DAY NIGHT, I SAW HER STANDING THERE, TICKET TO RIDE, DRIVE MY CAR and YOU CAN’t DO THAT up against 19TH NERVOUS BREAKDOWN, SATISFACTION, PLAY WITH FIRE, RUBY TUESDAY and HEART OF STONE how could you choose?

Howzabout WHILE MY GUITAR GENTLY WEEPS, REVOLUTION, GOLDEN SLUMBERS, BACK IN THE USSR and STRAWBERRY FIELDS FOREVER vs. BROWN SUGAR, YOU CAN’T ALWAYS GET WHAT YOU WANT, STREET FIGHTING MAN, ANGIE and OUT OF TIME?

Personally, I COULD NOT DO IT. I’m not exactly an indecisive type either.

Incidentally, I’m a huge KINKS fan as well. I suppose I could add ALL DAY & ALL OF THE NIGHT, SUNNY AFTERNOON, YOU REALLY GOT ME, LOLA and DEAD END STREET to this particular mix.

The only way I definitvely prefer THE BEATLES is as *ahem* men. WIth my mindset, that’s often what it boils down to. Sue me.

Well, I’m an autonomous woman with no ties and no obligations to anyone. THIS WEEK. We’ll see what happens down the pike…

    About the trailer…

Yeah, strikingly ordinary. But I adore SIR RIDLEY and of course RUSSELL. Nice to see Mr. Crowe in character actor territory once again. Hate to have it be a letdown with that particular pedigree.

    But we’ll see….

  27. For me, the best part of the trailer was Crowe with a Southern accent. It occurs to me he’d be a perfect casting choice for Bill Clinton.

Otherwise, it looks unremarkable. Probably solid, possibly entertaining, but nothing to have your tux pressed for.

  28. Wow JB, you’re right! I could see that…I mean I probably woudn’t, but I could.

  29. Seeing how there is too much talk on other trailer’s songs that I can’t even weed it out,

what is the song used in this trailer?
    its been bugging me

  30. Thanks for stopping by, Jorgen. I’m looking around for info, but I can’t find any.

    Does anyone else know?
