‘Synecdoche, New York’ Nears Distribution Deal
Charlie Kaufman’s Synecdoche, New York, one of the more anticipated films around the LiC offices, may soon be picked up by Sony Pictures Classics for distribution in the US. The Hollywood Reporter’s Gregg Goldstein and Steven Zeitchik describe the process as being in “advanced negotiations.”
Normally this is where I’d tell you what the film was all about, but Synecdoche is under a full LiC blackout and all I know is that Philip Seymour Hoffman is in it and that reviews out of Cannes were mixed.
All we need to know is that Charlie Kaufman wrote Being John Malkovich, Adaptation and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. That’s enough.

“Excuse me, what the fuck?”
Seriously, Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead, The Savages and Charlie Wilson’s War. One Year.
That’s crazy.
Jeez I forgot how funny he was in CWW.
I looove his last line to that woman (”How was I?”)
I wish Charlie Wilson’s War had been Gust Avrakotos’ War.
Synecdoche, New York can’t get to one of the arthouses in Marin County fast enough. (turns into Joker) Come on! Hit me!
No spoilers, but I read the screenplay and am still trying to decide how I feel about it. I think Kaufman’s out-Kaufmanned himself, for better or worse. There are arguments for each.
My gut says it’s for the better. The befuddled Cannes audiences only make it seem more excellent to me. Here’s hoping anyway. It still remains to be seen how he is as a director. With PSH, I have little fear however.
I read the script too, and absolutely loved it. Kauffman keeps taking his obsessions further and further. If he’s an even competent director, this could be the best thing that sports his name yet.
The supremely strong cast is what gives me the most hope, really. Have you looked at the lineup? He’s got practically every other strong female actress in Hollywood.
I thought the script was brilliant. Kaufman pushes into Haruki Murakami style magic realist abstraction to dazzling effect. But jennybee’s response to the script will be echoed by many with regards the film. It will also undoubtedly inspire fierce champions and detractors. It’s still my most anticipated of the year, together with Benjamin Button.
