Jonze Has Final Cut on ‘Wild Things’

Per a heads up from Joel: Where the Wild Things Are producer Gary Goetzman was pigeonholed and gangbanged by a flock of Comic-Con reporters on the City of Ember train headed for San Diego yesterday.

According to CHUD’s Devin Faraci, Spike Jonze has final cut on Wild Things and that production house Playtone supports him. Faraci quotes Goetzman as saying “We support Spike’s vision. We’re helping him make the vision he wants to make.” He also denies the film is not kid friendly.

Goetzman goes on to say that the animatronic creatures looked great, but they misjudged how well they’d hold up in jungle weather.

According to AICN’s Mr. Beaks, there are contractual running time issues, but fears of Jonze leaving the project or rumors of Max Records (who plays Max) giving a bad performance are unfounded.

Goetzman is saying all the right things, but that’s his job as a producer. We’ll be keeping an eye on Wild Things with our fingers crossed.

  1. That is rather bizarre that he has the final cut, but hey, he’s a creative guy with “the kid in him” and so what if he’s had some contrived moments? I would wage even money he will pull this long-anticipated adaptation of this staple of American cildren’s literature. It’s the most popular of the Caldecott winners, and it’s still the read-aloud champion in elementary school classrooms.

  2. The contradictions between this producer and the studio dweebs is interesting. I can’t help thinking the producer is talking out of his ass to some extent, trying to do a little hopeful damage control before going in front of the fan boy masses. I’m sure this isn’t what he wants to be talking about during the entire Comic Con.

  3. In a blogging sense, I’ve only recently been paying closer attention to the produciton process of certain films so I have no frame of reference to separate the facts from the spin. I can only pass on what I hear and then speculate. Perhaps in a year my speculation will have more value.

    Perhaps not.

  4. I’m not sure my speculation is worth a damn either, but if we didn’t speculate there’d be no commenting!

  5. We aggressively support speculation here at LiC. (and whenever I saw ‘we’ I do so with full knowledge of the irony that it is only ‘me’) I just feel the need to point out when I’m talking out of my ass…as though it’s not abundantly clear.
