Gilliam and Depp Tilting at Windmills Again?

Jean Rochefort and Terry Gilliam are Lost in La Mancha

My overriding thought as I watched Lost in La Mancha, the documentary about Terry Gilliam’s imploding Don Quixote movie, was that the film starring Johnny Depp and Jean Rochefort might’ve been interesting had it ever gotten finished. Well, according to Showbiz Spy, Terry Gilliam is talking about picking up the project again next year contingent upon Johnny Depp’s schedule.

“As far as we’re concerned, it’s on. When Johnny’s ready, we’re ready. We’re just talking about dates to film,” the director is quoted as saying. “Basically it all depends on his schedule but otherwise we’re set. It will be next year some time, before next summer anyway.”

Vulture referred to a Hello! magazine piece last week that made a similar claim based on unnamed sources.

Wishful thinking on Gilliam’s part? We’ll see. Meanwhile, the latest film from Gilliam and Depp, The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, is in post production.

  1. If the internets has taught me anything about film making, it’s that half the battle to getting a difficult project going is well-placed rumors, half-baked innuendo, and wishful thinking by the right people. Although Gilliam’s force of will hasn’t worked well for him in the last 20 years, I’m hopeful this one actually happens. Lost in La Mancha hinted at one of the best movies from Gilliam in a long while.

  2. I really hope it happens, “The Man who killed Don Quixote” is a film I have always wanted to see.

  3. Your take and my take are very much the same, Joel. This thing very much has the feeling of Gilliam flogging his own horse, but if I can play a tiny part in helping him, I’m happy to try. Like Nick, I hope it really happens.

  4. I’m curious about the movie, but I’m not sure it’s not destined to be overshadowed by the incredible story of Lost in La Mancha. I felt drained and disheartened just watching the (nonetheless entertaining) documentary about his failed attempts at the film.

  5. I wonder if they’ll get Jean Rochefort back since he was the source of so many of the problems. He would’ve been great.

  6. If I recall, his doctor ordered him to not doing any more strenuous activity, especially horse-back riding, which was what precluded him dropping out originally. I wonder if he’s even up to the task now? He might have healed in the ensuing years, but at age of 78 I doubt it.

If this movie does go forward and he’s not returning, I bet you a MILLION DOLLARS that fanboy talkbacks light up with unanimous certainty that Sir Ian McKellen take the role. I’m sure the studio would love it., but it doesn’t necessarily make sense.

  7. Of course because Fanboy Dictum states that all characters who are old should be played by Gandalf, just like all chicks who are in action movies should be Angelina Jolie….or is she 5 years ago already?

  8. Don’t forget that all villains should be played by Crispin Glover.
