Brad Pitt: Actor, Father, ‘Bastard’

It’s official: Brad Pitt is a Bastard. According to Variety, the actor has signed on the dotted line to star in Quentin Tarantino’s next film Inglorious Bastards as a Tennessee hillbilly who leads a team of eight Jewish soldiers in fighting the Nazis during WWII.

You may remember I resisted this news all along while the rest of the planet assumed it was a done deal. In this case, the rumor has become fact and I was wrong. I hate wrongness, but I will live with it because I’m happy to see Brad Pitt in a Quentin Tarantino movie.

Most irritating of all however is another Nikki Finke TOLDJA!

Pitt will be joined by director Eli Roth (Hostel) who already signed on to the project while Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead), David Krumholtz (TV’s Numb3rs) and B.J. Novak (TV’s The Office [US]) are still in talks.

The latest rumor is that Nastassja Kinski is in early talks for a role as well.

Tarantino alum Tim Roth had also been rumored, but his new TV series Lie to Me will conflict with filming.

A couple of months ago, this project seemed like a pipe dream, but now it’s all coming together. With a start date set for October 13, Tarantino seems to still be trying to be ready for Cannes 2009. I didn’t believe that statement either, but now that Pitt is on board, I’m going to keep my trap shut.

  1. This is such good news. Like you, I’m thrilled to see a Pitt/QT collabo.

  2. Yay (about PItt, in any case).

  3. Craig, ONLY YOU could get away with calling our beloved BRAD a bastard.

    Oh, honey…

  4. I’m sure I’ve got good company, my dear. He’s likely being called a bastard internet wide.

  5. So is anyone ALREADY burned out on Inglorious Bastards? I am. What is it about this film that burns up the blog-o-dome (see what I did there, Craig? Just for you my friend) so much? Is there some kind of brilliant marketing machine at work behind the scenes already? If so, color me impressed.

  6. Brad in Bastards is so better than Leo in Bastards.

Happy to see Brad getting the legendary Tarantino “career jumpstart” so maybe he’ll get a job or two after this.

Should somebody tell Nikki Finke that “toldja” is the Czech word for “asshat”?

  7. I read something just yesterday how strange it is that there is so much attention being paid to this film (I’m guilty as hell). It’s not a blockbuster. Neither Kill Bill nor Grindhouse got this kind of attention. I mean, we’re talking about casting…rumors half the time at that.

hahah…Blog-o-dome. I’m thinking of settling on Blogtopia.

“TOLDJA” reflexively makes me want to kick something.

  8. I think the primary reason this film hs been receiving such an inordinate amount of online attention has to do with the longevity of its developmental life. It’s the reason I believe Gangs of New York received so much more attention pre-release than most Scorese films (and in each case, of course, many are hoping/wishing that the upcoming film be the filmmaker’s magnum opus).

The thing is, I think a lot of folks are setting themselves up for disappointment, particularly if Tarantino’s going to go as trashy with it as some suggest from reading the screenplay. There will a long, grueling argument after it’s released about whether or not he transcended the material or just had the playtime of his life with it. And each side will have a good deal of ammo, probably.

See? I’m analyzing the probable post-release reaction before a shot has been composed. That’s a sure sign that a film has been, as Evan says, a little overexposed (before its actual production has begun, no less).

  9. Somehow I’m even more excited about Pegg-QT than Pitt-QT.

  10. Pegg and QT is too good.
