Jolie replaces Cruise as ‘Edwin A.’ becomes ‘Edwina’?

Back in July, I passed along some rumors regarding the production of the spy thriller Edwin A. Salt. You may remember at one point the film was set to star Tom Cruise with Philip Noyce directing. Then, Fox entertainment news clown Roger Friedman claimed Tom Cruise was out and Will Smith was in. Meanwhile, Moviehole’s Clint Morris debunked that rumor saying Cruise was still in, while The Hollywood Reporter said that Noyce was doing Captain Blood (turns out that didn’t mean he was off Salt as I’d suggested).

Got all that? Well forget it.

This afternoon Fleming reported that Noyce is still attached to direct, but that Angelina Jolie has been brought in to replace Tom Cruise as the CIA officer who is accused of being a Russian sleeper spy.

Naturally this will involve a title change of some kind.

The whole reason I ever brought any of this up was because it was an opportunity to make fun of Roger Friedman. I’ve learned my lesson.

  1. Oh it’s always worth making fun of Roger Friedman. And Fox News.

Edwin A. or Edwina? Is that like Glen or Glenda? Hey, there’s an idea for a film.

  2. Next time I happen across a Friedman item, I’ll be sure to mock him.

I wonder if Jolie could pull off a transvestite…I don’t like to think about it.

  3. Hmm. Noyce has the chops to make something extraordinary, like The Quiet American, or he can elevate commercial material like the Jack Ryan movies with Harrison Ford… Now, according to Fleming this is a “star vehicle” for Angelina Jolie.

As Alison notes, it’s always worthwhile to make fun of Roger Friedman and the diseased monkeys who actually pay him.

  4. Huh, weird twist on this one. Tom Cruise is not having a good year, it appears.
