‘Che,’ ‘Changeling’ and ‘Wrestler’ join ‘Class’ at NYFF

Benicio del Toro in Steven Soderbergh’s Che
Steven Soderbergh’s two-part biography Che, Clint Eastwood’s Changeling and Darren Aronofsky’s Wrestler have joined Lawrence Cantet’s Cannes jury prize winning The Class at The New York Film Festival which runs September 26 to October 12.
Shown in two parts totaling 4 1/2 hours at Cannes, Che does not have a distributor and no one seems to know if or in what form it will eventually find its audience. NYFF might prove to be the only place to see it in all its unbastardized glory until it hits DVD.
Other highlights of the Cannes heavy line-up include: Wong Kar Wai’s Ashes ot Time Redux, Arnaud Desplechin’s A Christmas Tale, Jerzy Skolimowski’s Four Nights with Anna, Matteo Garrone’s Gomorrah, Mike Leigh’s Happy-Go-Lucky, Lucrecia Martel’s The Headless Woman, Steve McQueen’s The Hunger, a restored print of Max Ophuls’ Lola Montes, Olivier Assayas’ Summer Hours, Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Tokyo Sonata and Ari Folman’s, Waltz with Bashir. IndieWIRE has the full line-up.
For those of you keeping score at home, SpoutBlog’s Karina Longworth suggested Che might get another crack at critics at NYFF back in July. When she’s right, she’s right…and she’s right.

GOOD GOD! I want to take a leave of absence from work and attend the NYFF. That’s an impressive line-up.
Plus, you know, New York in Sept is kinda amazing too.
Yeah, to those of us who don’t go to Cannes, this is a pretty great lineup.
I wonder if I could swing it.
Oh. My. God. I’m so f*cking in, it’s not even funny.
ETA: Now there’s that pesky little detail…how do I score tix? :P
Tickets go on sale on 9/7 in person and 9/8 on line.
Do they have passes or is it a movie by movie situation, do you know?
Craig I am almost certain it’s a movie by movie situation.
Anyone who decides to head over will get a red carpet treatment from me, that much is certain!
Despite the fact that I have been seeing many films year in and year out for about 30 years, I must confess I have yet to attend a single film at the NYFF. I can’t explain it, it just never happened.
However, this year I plan on attending some of these, but I must act soon. Aronofsky, Soderberg, Kar-Wei and the restored Ophuls! Wow! Heavenly stuff.
Craig I hope you can do something, we are waiting for you.
Dinner with the Julianos?
Absolutely! Italian, too. And the NYC tour!
Jeez, like I’m not already tempted enough. I’ll be seeing what I can make happen. I still have room on credit cards. lol
Do it!
Hahah…well, I couldn’t catch the whole festival, but depending on when Che is scheduled (if I can get a ticket for it) I might be able to break off a healthy chunk of it. I will keep you posted for sure.
Two more items that I’m sure all the denizens of LIC would love to see are the opening night feature, the French Palme d’Or, THE CLASS as well as Arnaud Despletchin’s A CHRISTMAS TALE. Despletchin’s previous film, KINGS AND QUEEN was one of my favorites of the year it was released.
This is getting more and more exciting the more it is all pondered. The Eastwood, THE CHANGELING is another priority.
Alison’s a New Yorker, maybe she has some plans too.
The Craigster in New York? I’ll also have to show him ’round these parts!
Dorothy, I don’t know what made me think you were in LA?!?
An LiC New York party!
Do you guys work for the NYC Tourist Board or somethin’? Sheeez! Tryin’ to tempt a Left Coaster…
Let’s see: so far we have Dorothy, Alison and myself. I bet there are a few others here too? Maybe that suave Frank Booth is a New Yorker too?
I’m just going to have to pretend…as usual*sigh*
Frank Booth is a Bay Area cat like yours truly, Sam.
Terrific line-up. New Yorkers are luckier than usual this year.
Shit. If I hadn’t just dropped several wads on a bunch of trinkets, I’d consider going myself.
Hmmmmmm.
Craig, I hope you can find a way to go. Hop a freight train or something. You, Sam, Dorothy, Alison, James Lipton, et al. could even do a podcast!
I imagine that, eventually, Che will get the Little Dorrit treatment and be screened in two parts.
I’m in New York too. And I’m hittin’ this festival like crazy.
Sigh, I too have spent too much cash on trinkets and too much vacation time on…vacating the office this summer. No NYFF trip for me, which means all you NY LIC’ers (and hopefully Craig) need to attend so the rest of us can live vicariously through you.
Should be awesome. I look forward to reviews and in-depth commentary I can’t read for films on my blackout list (ha, how ironic is that?).
That restored print of Ophuls’ Lola Montes alone has me wishing I wasn’t on the other side of the country…
“If I hadn’t just dropped several wads on a bunch of trinkets.”
nice euphemism, but “wads” gave it away.
“Dorothy, I don’t know what made me think you were in LA?!?”
Jezz Sam, she’s only NY city’s intrepid DA!
Craig, get yourself a Virgin Blue flight and a festival press pass this minute. How can you possibly pass up the opportunity to see such films, dine with the Juliano’s, take in the bright lights with Ms Porker, and maybe catch up with Alison too?
We’re talking the dream vacation here.
sartre! It’s so exciting to see you get online for a bit!
Craig, you should definitely come and visit the Big Apple. :-)
I’m workin’ on it. TIFF kind of stole NYFF’s Thunder this morning, but I still want to go.
“. . . nice euphemism, but “wads” gave it away.”
You know me too well, monsieur.
Craig, maybe you could set up an internet NYFF fund, like one of those televangelists. You could fill the vacuum created by Tammy Faye’s noble departure.
hahah…I’ll dye my hair lavender and cry on camera.
