Coens get ‘Serious’
With Burn After Reading set to premiere next month, it looks like Academy Award winning filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen are getting down to business with their next project, the black comedy A Serious Man.
According to Variety’s Tatiana Siegel, the brothers have chosen Richard Kind (Confessions of a Dangerous Mind and TV’s Spin City) and stage actor Michael Stuhlbarg to star in the film. Shooting is scheduled to begin next month in Minneapolis.
Written by the Coens, A Serious Man tells the story of a professor (Stuhlbarg) whose wife leaves him but whose brother (Kind) won’t move out.

Yay! Such awesome news.
Well…I’ve always found Richard Kind kind of annoying, but we’ll see. And I like that after an all-star cast, they’re going for relative unknowns.
Yep, I agree Hedwig. Glad to see them scaling down to something (probably) smaller than their last few productions for this. Feels more like the early days of the Coens, which hopefully is a good thing.
And with that, A Serious Man is off my immediate radar while I patiently wait for it’s release, as ignorant as humanly possible. Considering my general level of healthy ignorance on all things, this shouldn’t be hard to maintain.
Three Coen films, three years in a row. Never happened before. Ecstatic that it’s happening now.
Yes, yes and yes to the three previous comments.
I don’t have an opinion about the cast either way, but I agree I like the idea of relative unknowns (ie no Clooneys or Pitts).
I always welcome more Coen Brothers movies. And I also like the idea that they’re using relative unknowns.
Every time a commercial for Burn After Reading I have to leave the room. So psyched for that movie.
I could tell the Burn After Reading trailer won over the audience before Vicky Cristina Barcelona.
The Women, not so much, except there was this one woman almost directly behind me by one row laughing at everything in every movie trailer; usually no one else was at all.
Interestingly, she only laughed a handful of times during the Allen film.
I love how seriously some of us are taking our private Coen blackouts.
The only thing I know about Burn After Reading is that the Coens are directing. Well, almost, and hopefully that’s how it will stay.
A Serious Man will not be so easy. Buzz started here in the spring and is about to get crazy. Filming begins Sept. 8th, and they’ve already made several of the locations public. Most of it is going to be on a residential street in Bloomington (suburb of Mpls and home to the Mall of America). Here’s an interesting local take on how they chose the location: http://www.startribune.com/entertainment/movies/26437374.html?elr=KArksUUUU
It’s pretty cool how they found a real street that looks like it’s right out of the 60’s.
Maybe I’ll do some guerrilla reporting once it gets going, but if one of the monkeys wants to come out on assignment, I promise I’ll show them a good time.
We expect daily reports and fuzzy cameraphone pics, Daniel. This is your DUTY. Don’t let us down.
The blackout won’t permit me to click on that link, but yeah, we want samples from the craft services table Daniel.
