Who Owns ‘Watchmen’?

Yesterday, Nikki Finke reported breathlessly on a lawsuit between Fox and Warner Bros. over Warner’s upcoming Watchmen directed by Zack Snyder (300). The project has kicked around Hollywood in one form or another since the original comic was published and Fox is claiming it owns the rights.
The big news yesterday was that the presiding judge denied a Warner Bros. motion to dismiss the case. Being one of Warner Bros. more important (and expensive) releases of 2009, this is a big deal from a business standpoint, but it probably doesn’t mean a thing from where we sit. The film will most likely be released on time, but it’s going to cost Warner Bros. a lot more than they’d originally planned.
David Poland has a quick but sharp analysis of the situation here.
