Film Noir Month: LiC meets MovieZeal in a dark alley

“It’s a wonderful situation because you’ve got it all, but you can’t put the fight on because you don’t have the money and there isn’t a man in all London who’ll let you have a shilling. You’ve got it all, but you’re a dead man Harry Fabian; a dead man.”
–Phil Nosseross in Night and the City

Have you been keeping up on Film Noir Month over at MovieZeal? If not, you’ve been missing a lot of great stuff from many faces familiar to LiC. Since my own review of Jules Dassin’s Night and the City went up today, of course I think this is a fine time to head over and see what all the fuss is about.

  1. While we’re cross-pollinating, may I please pass out some flyers among the intelligentsia? Invitation to cast a vote in our Oscar Contender Poll at AD. C’mon, it’ll be like stopping off for some debauched after-hours fun after your swanky black-tie gala at MoMA.

  2. Sweet, I never pass up an opportunity to prove how little I know.

    Will this be graded?

  3. not graded, per se, Craig.

However, your choices go on your permanent record and will be reviewed by appropriate heavenly authorities* on Judgment Day.

  4. Ok, but I’m not telling you how I voted.

  5. Great poll, Ryan.

Who voted for “Other”?! What’s missing? The Happening?

  6. So far, only two write-ins, Daniel. One for Blindness (which I forgot, so I added it to the poll), and the other for Righteous Kill (seems too re’Heat’ed to be a contender.)

I’m happy to see there are at least 40 films to look forward to over the next few months. (So, 30 that will ultimately disappoint, ha.)

Little too conventional, this selection. I’m ready for another stripper to write something.

  7. “Ok, but I’m not telling you how I voted.”

    please don’t.
I’m sure I’ll have enough to deal with on Judgment Day as it is.

  8. Hooray for Film Noir month at Movie Zeal!!!!!

  9. Craig, your NIGHT & THE CITY review was exquisitely evocative. You can FEEL like you’re really there watching it. Your descriptions are so alive and vivid.

I actually haven’t seen it. I didn’t even know that my beloved GENE TIERNEY was in it. My bad. I should really check it out one of these days.

    I HAVE seen the remake.

It’s supremely acted by ROBERT De NIRO and JESSICA LANGE. (No great surprise there.) They’re very believable in that romantic triangle. (Mr. De NIRO had no girlfriend in that film and he and JESSICA do have sex standing up in an alley, as I recall.) But CLIFF GORMAN almost steals the picture right out from under them as JESSICA’S volatile dangerous husband.

It’s really a disappointment ultimately (the parts are greater than the whole, as in so many motion pictures) but it’s well worth a watch.

GOD DAMN, you can write, honey.

Anything I can get you? A lollipop, perhaps?
