Don LaFontaine, Voiceover Artist: 1940 - 2008
By Craig Kennedy - September 1st, 2008; 10:19 pm
You might not recognize the name or the face, but if you’ve seen a trailer in the last 20 years or so, you recognize the voice. Don LaFontaine died today in Los Angeles apparently due to complications from a collapsed lung. After experiencing shortness of breath, he was admitted to the hospital on Friday where he was diagnosed with a blood clot.

Terrible news. He had a great iconic voice. He will be missed.
That’s too bad. RIP.
He was the “In a world…” guy and therefore made an indelible cultural contribution.
One can’t blame him for being so iconic he was asked to read the same five sentences for every movie trailer ever. Too bad to see this kind of talent go.
Thanks for posting that clip, Craig. I love that he didn’t mind doing voicemail messages for strangers. Wish I’d had his number. Sad news.
Very sad news. And he wasn’t that old either.
RIP.
This is seriously crushing to me, as much if not more so than many great industry people, including those you see on screen.
I just can’t believe it. I don’t even watch trailers, but his voice was still one of the best things about movies - any movie. Now it will be like walking into a theater and not smelling popcorn. Literally.
And who will succeed him? No one can, despite his colleagues’ best efforts.
I guess the good news is that he got some recognition in the last few years on TV. Seemed like such a nice guy, too.
serious, serious sadness
