December Forecast Addition: ‘Delgo’ 12/19
As I was preparing the Fall Forecast for December, I came across a computer-animated fantasy adventure called Delgo that I’d never heard of. For whatever reason, I left it off the list, but it turns out the December 12 release date was surprising news to people who have been following this project for a long time. Apparently, Atlanta based animators Fathom Studios are really excited about their first feature animation project as well because they’re doing their best to get the word out.
Details of the story are sketchy but the voice cast includes Val Kilmer, Anne Bancroft, Louis Gossett Jr., Freddie Prinze Jr., Jennifer Love Hewitt, Burt Reynolds, Malcolm McDowell and Sally Kellerman.
Anything animated that springs from an original idea warrants my attention, especially if it comes from someone besides Disney, Pixar or DreamWorks. We’ll see if it’s any good. In the mean time, you can find out more and catch a trailer here.

I’m glad to see a new face on the scene, too, and some of the animation looks pretty good. That said, there’s something about some of these “shots” and “sets” and even the dialogue that gives me a very strong Phantom Menace/Attack of the Clones vibe. Is it just me?
No, I had a similar response…something about the way the characters looked or something. I don’t know.
I think it’s just the aesthetic. Some of those settings looked like someone liked the way the Star Wars I-III trilogy looked, but thought their story would be a better fit for it than George Lucas’. Which it may very well turn out to be.
Always glad to see new talent on the scene making feature films, however, this looks better suited to direct-to-video than trying to compete with major studio fare in December.
To my eyes, the animation is a little less technically advanced than say Dreamworks SKG, Pixar, or even Paramount, but that doesn’t mean it won’t find an audience and do alright. However, December is always crowded so they’ve got an uphill battle ahead.
It is a little surprising they’re jumping into the holiday movie sweepstakes. Even if this one doesn’t turn out to be quite up to the level of a Pixar, I wish them success. As Pixar has steadily improved over time, perhaps Fathom will as well.
You have to admit there is room in this country for more animation from more sources.
We’d all be better off if the corporate-owned studios weren’t the ONLY folks making animated fare for kids (and adults) in this country.
Let me just shoot from the hip and say that that picture you’ve posted looks like a koala on an acid trip crapped a rainbow into a direct-to-video DVD case.
“…there’s something about some of these “shots” and “sets” and even the dialogue that gives me a very strong Phantom Menace/Attack of the Clones vibe. Is it just me?”
Plus, the reptilian playing Delgo is Jar Jar Binks’ less flamboyant brother,Twink Binks.
Hahahaha…
“a koala on an acid trip crapped a rainbow into a direct-to-video DVD case” ahahaha….well, I know what I’m not getting Evan for Christmas.
