Loose Ends: News You Can Lose
Here’s a collection of production items that have come across my desk in the last few days, none of which were interesting enough to inspire their own piece.
Ghostbusters 3. People are strangely excited about a possible new Ghostbusters sequel. I love the first one, barely remember the second and never thought to myself “gee, I wish they’d make a third.” Nevertheless, a couple of co-executive producers of US TV’s The Office, Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, are writing a script intended to bring Harold Ramis, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson back together. No mention of Ivan Reitman, Rick Moranis, Annie Potts or Sigourney Weaver. If Bill Murray actually turns up in this thing, I might be a little interested; otherwise, no way. Variety
Spider-Man 4 and 5. Nikke (Toldja!) Finke reports that Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire have signed on the dotted line for two more sequels to the Webslinger franchise which imploded and lost my interest in part 3. There are additional details including notes on the tone of the film and speculation about the villain, but I don’t care enough to type them up. If you do, check out Nikki’s original article. DHD
Tom Cruise and United Artists have purchased Douglas Preston’s best selling novel The Monster of Florence about a real-life Italian-based serial killer who had originally inspired the Silence of the Lambs sequel Hannibal. The screenplay will be written by Chris McQuarrie (Valkyrie). Cruise who will produce, may decide to star if he likes the script. Variety
Olivier Dahan (La vie en rose) has written the screenplay and will direct My Own Love Song in which Renee Zellweger and Forest Whitaker star as a wheelchair-bound singer and her friend who take a road trip to Memphis. Variety
Citing unnamed “intel,” fanboy website Latino Review brushes off spoiled rumors that Russell Crowe was going to be Dr. Watson in Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes adaptation to start new rumors that Russell Crowe will be Moriarity in same. Crowe as the villain makes much more sense than Crowe as the sidekick but I’ll believe it when one of the trades picks it up. Meanwhile, Latino Review gives astronaut Ellen Ochoa and educator Jaime Escalante 4 stars while singer Ricky Martin only gets 2. Megan Fox isn’t Latina but she gets 5 stars because she’s hot!
Inside Man 2: More Insiderer. Spike Lee plans to make a sequel to his 2006 success Inside Man. According to Lee, Denzel Washington and Clive Owen have expressed interest in the project. THR

Yeah, I heard about Ghostbusters 3. Hopefully they will come to their senses and toss that into the toilet. The original was a riot; the second one was a waste of time. No point in wasting anyone’s time any further, right?
Well, there’s nothing forcing us to see it so I guess there’s no harm done. I was just a little shocked that there are pockets of enthusiasm for it.
I know the first one was Columbia’s highest grossing movie ever until Men in Black came along, so it’s no surprise they’d take another dip, but who cares?
Ugh, Dahan’s project sounds pretty bad. But if it’s good enough for Forest, I suppose it’s good enough for me!
Thank you for saying that DP. I like the people involved so I didn’t want to crap on it but…
True enough, Craig. It’s just sad to see them waste resources and talent.
Lost it, lol ;)
Is anyone else very surprised by the news of Maguire and Raimi signing on the dotted line for two more Spiderman flicks?
I never summoned the courage to check out the third film to see what I thought of it–maybe when Spiderman 4 comes out, I’ll be forced to, depending on the quality of that?
Russell Crowe as Moriarty could work well. I loved Hedwig’s suggestion that Gary Oldman be considered for Dr. Watson.
I won’t say Ghostbusters 3 will never happen because Indy 4 happened, Rambo 4 happened and Rocky VI happened, all in the space of eighteen months. Anything is possible now. Well, Hollywood going back to the well once more in the quest for more lucre is possible, at least.
Gary Oldman would be an awesome Dr. Watson.
When that much money is involved Alexander, nothing surprises me really. Minor disappointment, but not surprise.
Gary Oldman is awesome in everything but he will always be Sid Vicious to me.
