Fox Searchlight Enters the Ring with ‘Wrestler’
The ever vigilant Nick Plowman of Fataculture just gave me the heads up to Anne Thompson’s Variety report that Fox Searchlight beat out Lionsgate, Overture, The Weinsteins, Sony and others for the rights to distribute Darren Aronofsky’s much praised film The Wrestler starring Mickey Rourke, Evan Rachel Wood and Marisa Tomei.
Which studio’s logo appears on the film when it hits theaters is less interesting than the fact that an Oscar-qualifying run was a key component of the deal giving folks in at least New York and Los Angeles a chance to see the film sooner rather than later.
Rourke has been unanimously praised for his turn as a washed up pro wrestling star and the film itself has been the most buzzed entry at both Venice and Toronto.

This is great news, it’s always good to hear about film’s that seem to need as much support as necessary getting it. Also means that I might get to see it early to as festivals in SA seem to be attracted to films with secure distribution deals for some odd reason.
I wrote a short story in the seventh grade about a washed up pro wrestling star.
I’m not saying Aronofsky ripped me off, but, yeah, he probably did. :)
Good news, good news…
Aronofsky…that hack!!
It seems to me Nick, with festivals outside of the biggies like Sundance, Cannes, Toronto etc, a film with distribution is more of a sure thing. Just a theory. If it means you’ll get a crack at Wrestler, I hope you’re right.
You could sue, Alexander.
I’m consulting my elite legal team, Joel.
Alex, I’d gladly represent you. Copyright infringement is alive and well–I’m talking to you Aronofsky :-)
I’ve always wanted to “lawyer up”
Haha, thank you, Dorothy! :-)
“Lawyering up” sounds like a good idea, Craig.
