Spain Digs the First Half of ‘Che’
The Argentine, part one of Steven Soderbergh’s Che Guevara biography starring Benicio Del Toro as the controversial revolutionary pulled in “substantially more than expected” during its public premiere in Spain according to one of the film’s bookers. Variety called the $2.5 million and $7,683 per screen average “non-spectacular but very encouraging.”
The trade notes that Che remains a popular figure in Spain and that the film is a Spanish co-production.
The NY Post’s Lou Lumenick reported back on September 4 that Magnolia had picked up the film for distribution in the US, but there has been no official confirmation. Cinematical’s Kim Voynar followed up on September 6 with an email to Mark Cuban himself and was told: “working on it.”
Both parts of Che recently played the Toronto International Film Festival where In Contention’s John Foote gave it a rave. The film will make its US premiere at the sold out Ziegfield theater on October 7 as part of the New York Film Festival.

Like I told you, I phoned Magnolia and they told me jack shit but whatever.
I’m still super stoked to see ‘Che,’ I think most people are anyway.
When is part 2 shown in Spain?
Look at you calling distributors and beating the bushes! Investigative journalist Nick Plowman everybody! (claps)

Good for you, Nicky baby. GOOD FOR YOU.
Sometimes you have to get medieval on peoples’ asses to get what you want.
And sometimes it’s worth it too.

This number, according to an excellent article in Film Comment tipped to me by glimmer, puts Che within $1.5 mil of breaking even.
I’d say, Watch your back, Dark Knight, but that might be premature.

Lookit Glimmer, all readin’ Film Comment and junk. Pretty highfalutin. Next week it’ll be biscuits and tea.
