Dark January Knights
Dispelling any doubt that Warner Bros. is hoping for a little hardcore Oscar action for The Dark Knight, THR’s Carl DiOrio is reporting that the studio plans to re-release their blockbuster superhero film in January during the lead up to the Oscar nominations.
With nearly $513 million in the bank as of this writing, those hoping The Dark Knight will surpass Titanic’s record $600 million (unadjusted for inflation) have reason to be optimistic, though the movie’s December DVD release will probably limit prospects.

Interesting. I still think it will be a hard sell for the Academy to nominate it for the big one. But I’ve been wrong before.
Put it onto IMAX screens in January. There won’t be a ton of competition for IMAX in January anyway and that’s arguably the best way to see the movie. Maybe include a “free ticket” to see it on IMAX with the DVD or Blu-ray release?
I don’t know, there’s so many ways to market this sucker and make another $20-30 million in ticket sales plus get some publicity for Oscar out of it, it kinda writes itself.
Heck, I might even be inspired to see it again in theaters by then, just to refresh my memory.
I agree, Matt. Anything can happen, but unless the later Oscar-bait releases end up not living up to expectations, this is a real stretch for the big one. We’ll see.
Joel, IMAX in January is a great idea. They should put you in their marketing department. :-)
Yes, by all means, get that film out there for the Oscar voters. Take no chances with short memories. I for one feel TDK has a good chance for a best pic nomination. Whether it would be deserved depends on the quality of the competition. Even at this point, though, there are plenty of arguments supporting its chances.
well thank you, Alison, but I like films too much to ever get hired in marketing at a major studio (heh heh). Anyway, I’m sure they’ve got that one on their radar.
If I’m not mistaken, I think they ARE re-releasing TDK in IMAX but aren’t sure about regular theaters.
That’s the way I interpreted the article too.
