Loose Ends: 9/12/08
Here’s what’s been cooking in the trades the last couple of days:
Adam Arkin joins Richard Kind and Michael Stuhlbarg in Joel and Ethan Coen’s upcoming dark comedy A Serious Man now shooting in Minnesota. Variety
Steven Soderbergh is apparently developing a film on the life of flamboyant pianist Liberace starring Michael Douglas. Richard LaGravanese (The Bridges of Madison County) is writing the script with plans for Soderbergh to direct. Matt Damon is in talks to play Scott Thorson, the man who claimed to be Liberace’s companion for 5 years and sued him for $113 million in palimony in 1982.
Soderbergh has wrapped shooting on his next film The Informant (also starring Matt Damon) and he plans to tackle The Girlfriend Experience before getting to Liberace. Variety
Wes Anderson plans to write the script for a remake of Patrice Leconte’s 2006 comedy Mon meilleur ami (My Best Friend) and he may end up directing. The original starred Daniel Auteuil (Jean de Florette, Cache) as a callous businessman whose friends are all business associates. When he makes a bet that he can produce a best friend, he has 10 days to prove it. Variety
Ray Winstone is in negotiations to replace Robert De Niro in Mel Gibson’s Edge of Darkness directed by Martin Campbell. De Niro bailed on the production last week over “creative differences.” Variety

My Best Friend was cute but not a stellar movie in my opinion. Why the hell does Wes Anderson want to remake it? Are there really no ideas left?
Another Coen Brothers coming down the pike. I’m excited. :-)
I’d be excited if they announced Wes Anderson was working on an adaptation of the Yellow Pages.
I’m just saying.
Re: Wes Anderson, I think it would be a very good move for him to make a movie that he didn’t originate. Between this and Fantastic Mr. Fox hopefully he can actually make a movie (a) that makes money, and (b) that doesn’t get critically slammed as being the same mannered toybox story as his last couple of movies (and for the record, I like his last couple of movies, but they do indicate an artist in need of a little shakeup).
Speaking of loose ends, have you seen this this?
More of the Cloonster. Which reminds me, Craig, we want the WWCD column revived!!!
I loved Anderson’s last couple, but I agree a change of scenery could do the boy some good.
Thanks for the head’s up Alison, that’ll probably turn up in future Loose Ends column.
As for WWCD….I keep meaning to start one, I swear.
Dunno about anyone else, but I’m intrigued by the idea of Michael Douglas playing Liberace.
Definitely not casting I would have foreseen there, Pierre.
It’s hard for me to imagine him doing it without verging on caricature, but then we’ll see.
