‘Quantum’ Theme: Another Way to Die
By Craig Kennedy - September 18th, 2008; 6:22 pm
Have a listen to Jack White and Alicia Keys singing the theme song to the new James Bond movie while you still can.
I like it much better than the last one, but I’ll need time to listen to it before I can compare it to the classics. Still, it’s better thanĀ I feared when I heard it was going to be Jack White. I just couldn’t fit his style in with Bond, but I think it works.

Uh-oh.
Where’s John Barry?
Hmm…I think I’m going to have to warm to it. I can dig the guitar, but I’m not used to hearing Alicia Keys sound that hard. I’ll deal, but I still it could have been a Duffy or Amy Winehouse for the sultry, jazzy style instead.
It’s not horrible…but I’m not that taken with it. It seems kind of aimless to me.
I’m kind of in the middle. We’ll see how it plays during the credits.
Let me start from scratch.
I think JACK WHITE is awesome. I own THE WHITE STRIPES’ ELEPHANT CD. I also enjoyed his acting in COLD MOUNTAIN.
I like ALICIA KEYS as well.
But that song is godawful.
IMO, these are the BEST BOND themes. As in the only memorable ones.
GOLDFINGER - SHIRLEY BASSEY
LIVE & LET DIE - PAUL McCARTNEY & WINGS
YOU KNOW MY NAME - CHRIS CORNELL
GOLDENEYE - TINA TURNER
A VIEW TO A KILL - DURAN DURAN
TOMORROW NEVER DIES - SHERYL CROW
NOBODY DOES IT BETTER - CARLY SIMON
THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH - GARBAGE
The rest of them don’t even resonate with me.
You generally need a cool retro vibe (or something similar) to make a BOND theme work. I suspected Mr. White and Ms. Keys would be very wrong for this assignment. (Despite their obvious talents.)
Unfortunate. But it happens.
I sincerely hope that the film (which I’m REALLY looking forward to) is better than the music.
Speaking of cool retro vibes…
I forgot to say that I am in COMPLETE agreement with Danny.
If they had used AMY WINEHOUSE or DUFFY, I think either one would have been perfect.
I don’t like it much, it’s okay.
Miranda, it appears we disagree about as much on Bond songs as we do actresses!
I thought this one was ok, but the Chris Cornell one was one of the all time worst.
Different strokes and all that.
It’s dire, dreadfully dated, artists obviously chosen for the American market and because a roomful of suits thought Jim White, hey he’s cool isn’t he?
Thanks for commenting Felin. I think you could probably make the “room full of suits” comment about every Bond film for the last 30 years. Not that the choices were bad, but that the people making them tended to be old and out of touch and were just trying to appeal to a younger market.
What the fuck is that?
I think White is a genius and Keys is great but this…
Of course, there hasn’t been a good Bond score or song since 1987.
Do the math!
Craig, for me, CHRIS CORNELL’S hard edged roughness made a lot of sense in terms of a brand new BOND whose dangerous ultramasculine vibe hearkened back to the elegant TIMOTHY DALTON.
Shoot me, baby…
I just happen to dig it.
As far as female actors are concerned…
In spite of the fact I’ve always been *ahem* heavily and exclusively into men, perhaps I just have better taste in famous women…?
Well, it’s a possibility at least.
But I adore you in perpetuity. Regardless of anything silly like a difference of opinion - and YOU KNOW THAT, TOO.
BTW, what the hell ever happened to that BOND thing that a bunch of us were gonna do?
Guess it was just a dream.
Too bad. Might’ve been fun.
*sigh*
To each her/his own as always Miranda.
As for the Bond thing. Since I sort of brought it up, it kind of fell to me to keep the ball rolling and I dropped it. If the others haven’t lost interest, there’s still time to do it.
Craig, we can still do this. We can save this project.
Who’s with me?
I think the last decent/interesting/memorable Bond theme was Tina Turner’s “Goldeneye.” But of course Christian’s right to praise The Living Daylights.
Cornell’s song has grown on me. This one I like a lot. Robert Wilonsky, the VIllage Voice critic, has a Saturday night late night radio show in Dallas, and he played it tonight. Pretty cool, IMO, Definitely different.
