Trailer: Ballast

Lance Hammer won the directing prize at Sundance for this stark character drama set in rural Mississippi, but because he passed up a deal with IFC and has chosen to release the film himself, Ballast is going to need all the attention it can get.

Ballast opens October 1 at Film Forum in New York.

  1. I was thrilled to find out that Hammer is going to be here to introduce a screening of Ballast at the end of August. Another Sundance pick I’ve been waiting for forever, along with Momma’s Man and Sugar.

  2. I haven’t caught Sugar yet. It was picked up by Sony Pictures Classics, but it has no release date.

  3. Yeah, I’m stoked to see this too. And Sugar (god I loved Half Nelson, I think it ranked as my #3 best film of that year), and Momma’s Man. Soon I hope!

  4. I just realized I never finished my review of Momma’s Man.

(hangs head in shame) Worst. Blogger. Ever.

I need an editor or something. Someone to tell me what to do.

  5. “I need an editor or something. Someone to tell me what to do.”

    *laughs huskily*

Don’t say that too loudly, my little crustacean. Somebody might hear you…

  6. It’s true though!

  7. Looking forward to seeing this on DVD in about a year, I suppose.

    Intriguing trailer.

Divine Ms. M, you’re too funny.

  9. Craig, I never finished my own review of MAMMA’S MAN as well, but I saw it at a time….well……….I won’t go there anymore……….point is you have some newer stuff to go at, even if that film is probably a **** effort.

  10. Wow, this one sures looks interesting. Consider me intrigued.

  11. I struggled with it a bit when I saw it at LAFF. My expectations were high based on the buzz out of Sundance, but my energy was low and it was a particularly challenging festival day. Not sure I gave it quite the attention it deserves (hence I didn’t bother linking to my festival review), but I look forward to seeing it again.

One thing about hte trailer is that it has an intensity that’s only sporadic in the movie. The movie is quiet and rather placid for the most part punctuated by moments of high drama.

Sam, I may still polish off Momma’s Man after all. It’s probably still playing out there in the country somewhere.

  12. Considering some of the more languid imagery in the trailer Craig, I was expecting it probably is wasn’t really a thriller. It may be that I’m simple-minded and only making the connection based on main characters that are black and the small-town look of it, but this Ballast trailer immediately reminded me of George Washington.

  13. You might be a better reader of trailers than me. There was something intensed and kind of unsettling about the trailer to me…I think it was the sounds.

  14. Thank you kindly, Dorothy.

I imagine it just comes naturally to moi.

I couldn’t live without compliments. I am a lion after all.

But when they come from a true goddess such as yourself, they’re far more memorable and appreciated.

    Trust me on this….
