Trailer: Wendy and Lucy
By Craig Kennedy - October 21st, 2008; 8:19 am
Here’s the trailer for Kelly (Old Joy) Reichardt’s Wendy and Lucy. Michelle Williams plays Wendy, a young woman whose road trip from Indiana to Alaska with her dog Lucy stalls out in a small Oregon town.
Having already played Cannes, Toronto and New York, Wendy and Lucy will hit AFI Fest in November and will open in limited release on December 10.

Wow, I hadn’t heard the first thing about this, but it looks very good.
I never saw Old Joy, though it’s been on my Netflix list for ages. Recommended?
I’ve heard good things about this but I don’t think we get it until February. No way I’m watching the trailer.
Old Joy was one of my Top 10 of 2006, JB, but I know a lot of people shrugged it off. It’s insanely uncomplicated. Two friends catching up on their lives for a couple hours. Amazing soundtrack by Yo La Tengo and some beautiful digivid shots of the Oregon backwoods.
I’d love to see it again some time. Any haters out there?
I love Old Joy. I love Michelle Williams. I cannot wait to see this. Like, it is up in my top 5 “films I want to see this year” list.
I missed Old Joy…it was one of those “blink and it’s gone” releases but it got some rave reviews. It’s currently rotting in my oversized netflix queue. I should overhaul that thing…
Anyway, yeah, this one looks good and I have Nick to thank for it being on my radar. I’d kind of forgotten about it until he brought it up a few weeks back.
I’ve heard a lot of good things about Michelle’s performance in this. I adore her. I’m glad good things are turning up for her.
She’s been through enough.
But I know the story line behind WENDY & LUCY. I hate stuff like that.
It’ll make me cry…
Ah! Nice to see I overlooked a selection I can now add to my AFI Fest schedule. It’s nice to see some-star power in a line-up that is otherwise lacking many commercial-draws compared to last year’s…
Not that I’m sayin’ comercial-draws should be the intent of a film-festival, just that it’s nice to balance the obscure (although given OLD JOY’s reputation, this should be plenty obscure) with the identifiable.
And we’ll want to hear your thoughts in a future Watercooler post, Danny B.
Hopefully I’ll see you there DB.
I’ve seen Old Joy. It’s still in my “I don’t know” category. I was favorable to it at the time. I think I still like it. I wouldn’t want to live in a world where every film was like it, though.
“I wouldn’t want to live in a world where every film was like it, though.”
I know what you mean, and sometimes it feels like it’s going in that direction. I’m having that reaction right now to Hannah Takes the Stairs which I finally sat down to watch a few weeks back.
It’s kind of interesting all by itself, but I’d hate it if all movies were like that.
Looks like they’re running a press screening Monday that I’ll be attending instead… I’m sure we’ll bump into each other quite a bit at AFI nonetheless, Craig.
Damnit I wish I had afternoons off….
Yeah, that’s certainly the one perk of still being in school. Then again, I do have classes two nights a week, which causes me to miss a lot more screenings than I would if they were during the day. Hopefully I’m able to get into Leonard Maltin’s section next semester, though, because each class basically consists of a screening of a to-be-released movie (they’ve already seen FROST/NIXON–gah!) and Q&A with talent involved… It will make my Thursday nights far less painful than now, when I sit there thinking about the screenings going on a building down.
The upside are the screenings, the downside are the Q&A’s.
Yeah, if I hear “Do you have any advice?” at a college Q&A again, I’ll puke… I loved when Charlie Kaufman pretty much refused to answer at SYNECDOCHE.
Turns out you may be lucky on this one, Craig. All reviews from the screening are subject to holds. You’ll be able to cover it right away without fearing getting taken off the list or getting a slap on the wrist when you see it at the festival…
Weird that they’re holding reviews. Can you give us a hint?
The main reason I would’ve liked to take advantage of the pre-screenings is so I could see more movies at the actual festival.
Right now I have all the bigger stuff penciled in and there’s no room for the small stuff. The bigger stuff is more exciting and is probably more interesting to readers, but the little stuff needs all the help it can get.
Yeah — I know the feeling. The current plan is 22 at the festival, 2 on screeners, and 2 press screenings. I applied to cover the CHE shindig and if I’m denied, it will make my ultimate decision to skip the press screening this Tuesday sting all the more… (I wish they could tell us before tickets sell out.) Then again, I’m very skeptical and watching it OnDemand might suit me better anyway…
And yeah, of course I’ll give a hint. Usually I publish the review in the archive anyway so it goes up early on MRQE and just hold the link for the main page.
