‘Doubt’ Eases Doubts Over AFI Opening

AFI announced this evening that John Patrick Shanley’s Doubt starring Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams will fill in for the The Soloist as the opening night film for AFI Fest on October 30.

According to Miramax president Daniel Battsek: “The movie is still being finished, but we were so excited to show Doubt and help our friends at AFI Fest and the American Film Institute at the same time. We couldn’t possibly pass up the opportunity.”

AFI traded up if you ask me.

Doubt is scheduled to open on December 12.

  1. I just came home two minutes ago from Ashes of Time Redux and Ballast, so I’m floating on air.

As you say, sounds like AFI traded up here.

  2. Up, yes. But Doubt … I just think I know where it’s going. Plus, it’s time for the Amy Adams backlash to begin.

  3. There was a brief golden, post Junebug moment that I adored Amy Adams, but Enchanted almost killed it for me and I was a little disappointed by her in Miss Pettigrew. We’ll see how she does in Sunshine Cleaning.

  4. My sense about Adams is that she has made her career more in interviews than onscreen. I’ve read she simply blows press people away in interviews. But I wasn’t a huge Junebug fan, so that doesn’t help. But I could be wrong on this one. And Sunshine Cleaning sounds potentially interesting.

  5. I love Adams, especially in CHARLIE WILSON’S WAR.

She was a bit annoying in PETTIGREW, yes, but I dunno if she could’ve avoided it given the character.

  6. I’m not off the Adams wagon yet. Hell, I even loved her in Catch Me If You Can, she just hasn’t lived up to the hopes I had for her after Junebug.

And KB you might be right. A lot of what drew me to her was not the movie itself, it was the commentary track she did for it. Likeability personified.

  7. Yeah, I’m still in firmly on the Amy Adams bandwagon. I even liked her in Talladega Nights for goodness sakes – one of the only reasons I watched that piece of trash. I will say that despite her not having recreated the acting tour de force she gave in Junebug, at least she wasn’t been simply recreating the same characters all the time. Sure they all have a sense of likeability, but she’s trying new things, finding her feet. I think.

  8. Yeah, she mixes it up a little bit. She isn’t just doing the same character over and over.
