Trailer: Gran Torino

Eagle-eyed and ever-vigilant Nick Plowman noticed that Apple has the new Gran Torino trailer that’s supposed to be playing this weekend in front of Changeling.

74 bonus points to Jennybee for anticipating the “Get off my lawn!” line in the poster thread.

I like the trailer. The simple subject feels like a good match for the direct Eastwood style and I have to admit it’s good to see Clint in ass-kicking mode and in a way appropriate to his age.

  1. Wow, 74 points. I’m good.

I like the trailer, too. It’s all Clint, with some others to push against. I had expected this to be more of an ensemble than this makes it look, but I don’t know why. When Clint’s in ass-kicking mode, he burns up the screen and everyone around him.

Funny, though, how his gravelly snarl and Batman’s are becoming more and more alike. The voice people questioned on Christian Bale they would never dare question on Clint.

  2. He totally brings the gravelly snarl. It kinda makes me smile.

When I heard he played a racist vet, I wondered how it was going to go over, but now I see the broad outlines and it makes sense.

I’ll let you know when I figure out exactly what those 74 bonus points are useful for…I’m guessing bragging rights.

  3. WOW. Just, WOW.

  4. Agreed

  5. I suppose itt’s about time to pencil Clint Eastwood in for a Best Actor nomination.

In a muted, possibly exquisite way, this kind of does look like the final chapter in the Dirty Harry saga, ha.

  6. The Academy certainly doesn’t have any compunction about throwing Oscar after Oscar Clint’s way. And while I’ll be the first to say he’s deserved every one, this looks like a definite lock already.

  7. Alexander, I get a Dirty Harry vibe off of it too…in a good way. It’s like Dirty Old Harry.

I agree about the Clint/Oscar sitch, but they’ve been seemingly unwilling to reward his acting. He’s got a couple of noms, but no win. This one might change that. My gut says it’ll get an acting nom, but not directing or picture this time around.

  8. I don’t know, folks. I’ll reserve judgment until I’ve seen it, but it feels like I’ve seen this story before. Always happy to see Clint being Clint, but I expected something different from the premise I originally heard.

Who gets the bonus points for calling the dark horse, Million Dollar Baby Oscar vibe this one has? Someone predicted it…DEAD. ON.

  9. It does feel familiar, but comfortingly so in my book. I’m not expecting anything revolutionary out of it.

  10. I’ll reiterate how happy I am to see Clint kick some ass again.

  11. I’m all over this film and think it looks great … a bit like Unforgiven driving down Dirty Harry street.

But Eastwood the director (or could it be hid DP, Tom Stern) seems to be stuck in the same color palette since Mystic River. I love his films, but it would be nice to see some differentiation. Anybody else feel the same?

  12. Eastwood’s palette seems to have become increasingly monochromatic with each film, with certain justifications in each case (making his Iwo Jima war films look kind of like washed-out stock wartime footage, for instance). That said, a change of pace would probably do him some good.

Also, barely on-topic: I’m getting tired of hearing Angelina Jolie scream “I… WANT… MY SON!!!” It’s already becoming the “IS THAT MY DAUGHTER IN THERE?” of Changeling in my mind and I haven’t even seen the film yet. Oh well, it’s a Universal film and I had my TV tuned to MSNBC, so I was asking for it.

  13. “a bit like Unforgiven driving down Dirty Harry street.” yes!

I have to say I’m surprised Jeff Wells didn’t complain about the “green slime” all over the trailer.

Alexander, that line notwithstanding, I’m strangely drawn to AJ in the clips of Changeling, though I’ve cooled on the movie itself. I guess I’m just in the tank for her.
