Zack and Miri Make a P-O-R-N-O

Did someone turn the clock back to the 1950s when I wasn’t looking? I’m sure Kevin Smith and The Weinstein Co. were expecting a little controversy over Smith’s romantic comedy Zack and Miri Make a Porno — indeed they were probably hoping for it — but who’d have thought that TV stations and newspapers would refuse to run ads for the film just because of the title?

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: we are a nation of 12-year-olds.

PORNO! PORNO! PORNO!!!

For those of you who can handle it, Zack and Miri Make a Porno opens on October 31.

  1. As a huge fan of p-o-r-n-os, this type of censorship sucks, even if it probably wont make much of a difference in terms of influencing people to see the film, I don’t think. Grow UP America! ;)

  2. Nicky, you’re under age. *shocked*

But I’m a totally grown up girl. So I think it’s silly.

    *giggle*

    Porno…

  3. I think it’s particularly ridiculous and hypocritical given the standards on TV today. Now, I’m a nice little liberal free-speech kinda gal, but when E! and Entertainment Tonight and all those other celebrity-obsessed forums regularly feature segments on the latest steamy underwear shoot, the most recent Playboy cover girl’s photo spread (barely pixelated), men and women doing all manner of debaucherous stunts on these horrid reality competitions and naked women having molds made of their hooly-o’s or of lying on a table wearing only a couple of micro-dollops of whipped cream, well it makes me feel a little more prudish than I’d like to think I am and convinced that if I ever have children I’ll have to raise them in a cave in Peru. Then to have some of these same networks afraid of a title? Unbelievable.

  4. Great point JB. The hypocrisy just magnifies the stupidity of it. When they think they can make money off it, it’s ok. I guess in this instance it boils down to community standards. The communities where newspapers refuse to run the ads probably aren’t running ET either.

However, don’t even get me started on the whole issue of violence getting a free pass, but sex is still a big no-no….

  6. Well, as a film, I figure it can’t be any worse than Clerks 2, can it?
