The 2008 AFI Fest kicked off officially last night in Hollywood with the world premiere of John Patrick Shanley’s Doubt starring Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams. Because of the last minute scheduling of the film, Streep and Hoffman were supposed to be red carpet no-shows but it turns out Streep was able to make it after all.

For LiC, the festival really begins tonight with a handful of Halloween-appropriate screenings including Nacho Vigalando’s debut feature Timecrimes (Los Cronocrimenes), a tense little sci-fi/horror/thriller that begins with an act of voyeurism gone bad and ends up…well, it’s better you see for yourself. It’s one of the few films at AFI I was able to catch in advance and I recommend it.

My choice for the evening is the world premiere of Until the Light Takes Us, a documentary about the Norwegian “black metal” art-music movement described as “part modern-art splinter group, part terrorist movement and part rock scene.”

Up tomorrow: Steven Soderbergh’s Che.

Take a look at the complete AFI schedule here.

  1. Have fun, pal. I’ll keep a close eye and tip-toe around plot points as usual for the next week.

  2. I hope I discover some interesting stuff. I’m a little worn out, but I’m sure I’ll hit my 2nd wind.

  3. I’m worn out, too, so the selections better be at least half as good as they were last year.

Pretty sure my choice is THE CHASER, but I may end up in the same auditorium as you, Craig, if I can’t get over fast enough from ZACK AND MIRI to get a good seat.

Hopefully Halloween in Hollywood isn’t too chaotic tonight… it could be quite a mess to endure for one movie…

  4. Your enthusiasm for months to see CHE will finally be rewarded with tomorrow’s screening which we would all love to be appraised of. Good luck with the rest of the offerings over the weekend!

  5. The thing about che … I loved when Jeff Wells came out of it and reported that afterward everyone liked it. After four and a half hours, I assume everyone who didn’t like it split at intermission.

  6. Enjoy it Craig, Che I mean. And well, the entire fest, the line up of which is spectacular. Yay!
