The Bond Plays On

Ok, so I saw Quantum of Solace today. The review is forthcoming, but suffice it to say that for the second time this year (have we really forgotten Indy IV already?) I’ll be forced to defend a much maligned entry in a tired movie franchise — at least based on the reviews of the people I know. I haven’t read what the pros have to say yet.

In the meantime, the informal Bond-a-Thon continues. First up, Miranda Wilding injects a welcome feminine perspective into the proceedings with her opinion of the Top 5 Bond films. Miranda makes some interesting choices proving that there’s a different Bond for everyone. It’s one of the great things about the series if you ask me.

Also for today, Alexander Coleman tries to wash the taste of Solace out of his mouth with a return to Casino Royale.

  1. I loved QUANTUM OF SOLACE, and for the life of me can’t understand all the bile being thrown its way. An action movie hasn’t lit my fire quite the way this one has in a long time. I thought it was fantastic.

  2. Well, at least I’m not completely alone.

You forgot about defending Speed Racer, too.

  3. I defended Indy 4, too, which I’ve certainly not forgotten!

As I said over at CCC, though the review of Casino Royale came out after Quantum of Solace, I saw the first Craig Bond flick the day before seeing Quantum of Solace, which I fear made the 2008 movie look even worse. The upside being that I found myself liking Casino Royale significantly more than I had before, when I saw it two years ago, and it now looks even better in contrast to its follow-up.

  4. So I’m not completely out on a limb after all!
I didn’t care for the editing of the opening action sequence, but I thought Craig was subtly good, I liked his interplay with M, I liked Fields, I liked the looming spectre (no pun intended…well maybe a little) of this mysterious powerful organization. I liked White.

The plot….meh. I honestly didn’t pay too much attention to it. None of the Bond plots really hold up to careful scrutiny.

In the end, this felt like a decent middle of a trilogy and I enjoyed it.

  5. I liked the opera scene and the final scene in the desert. Among other things.

  6. The opera scene certainly looked cool, though in retrospect it didn’t make a great deal of sense that this ultra-powerful organization would be meeting like that.

But then, it doesn’t make a great deal of sense that a billion dollar industrialist would build an underwater lair either so clearly if I’m going to start nitpicking logic I need to find a new series of movies to watch.
