Trailer: Nothing But the Truth

Here’s the trailer to Rod Lurie’s upcoming Nothing But the Truth starring Kate Beckinsale and Vera Farmiga.

I haven’t really looked at the big picture to see how crowded the actress categories are so far this year, but I think Beckinsale will surprise people who only think of her as a pretty face. Farmiga continues to expand her range and show that the strong impressions she’s made in smaller parts were not flukes.

Inspired by the events surrounding the Valerie Plame affair, Nothing But the Truth tells the story of a newspaper reporter (Beckinsale) who must choose between her principles and her family when she outs a CIA agent (Farmiga) and then is imprisoned for refusing to reveal her source.

The film, which also stars Matt Dillon, Alan Alda, David Schwimmer, Angela Bassett and Noah Wyle, opens December 19 in New York and LA and expands on January 9, 2009.

  1. Hmm, so the movie is implicitly taking Judith Miller’s side in the Valerie Plame case?

    Color me skeptical.

EDIT: Oh, I missed that the director was Rod Lurie. Not sure if that means it’ll be good, but it does burnish the liberal bona fides.

  2. Well, I love THE CONTENDER so much I own it.

ROD LURIE definitely knows how to put together material and make it marvelously compelling. He not only has balls but he has feminist principles as well.

I really wanted to see this. Glad it’s finally coming out.

    Thanks for that, Craig…

  3. I saw this a couple weeks ago.

It’s quite good. A bit tv-ish at times, but compelling performances (god I love Vera Farmiga) and writing, a good character study that actually challenges the viewer to formulate your own opinion of the events.

  4. Farmiga should have earned a Best Actress nomination for her work in Down to the Bone.

    This film definitely looks intriguing.

  5. Kate Beckinsale is no Judith Miller. All I’m saying.

Lurie took the idea of a journalist suffering the consequences for outing an agent and he ran with it pretty far from Miller.

Ari, I don’t want to get into spoiler territory, but things happened in this movie I didn’t see coming. Am I just stupid or were you surprised by a few things as well? Be vague in your response.

    K. If you like Farmiga, I think you’ll definitely want to have a look.

Miranda, if you like Mr. Lurie’s other stuff, this could be right up your alley.

  6. Also, I want to add that Beckinsale probably has the less flashy part, but she’s great. I have a feeling she’ll be overlooked in favor of Farmiga and that’s too bad though Vera is defintely deserving.

  7. yeah, I thought it was consistently surprising and pretty uncompromising. And yeah, beckinsale gives her best performance here. she’s a really capable actress when given the right role (aviator, snow angels, this).

  8. Normally I wouldn’t say that I’m a overly big booster of Ms. Beckinsale.

She’s better in some things than in others. But she’s not a personal favourite of mine.

But, like Ari, I genuinely liked her in THE AVIATOR.

As someone who continues to worship at AVA GARDNER’S shrine long past her demise (and possesses the same irreverent wild streak), I absolutely cringed when I found out that Marty had cast Ms. Beckinsale as my idol.

I was REALLY hoping that he would go with someone like CATHERINE ZETA JONES.

But these are choices that are out of our hands and we must learn to live with them.

I’m sure that there are women out there who could have done it better. But Kate was actually very good.

Considering that she looks nothing like Ava, it was rather amazing. She really did have some idea of who the person was behind all this sensual beauty and she did a wonderful job of illuminating that and making it believable.

So I think - depending on the role and who directs her - that she may do some interesting things down the road.

You may be right, Craig. This may actually be something that I was looking for.

  9. I saw this movie at a screening just tonight. It was stunning- audience adored it. One great surprise after another and a sure nomination for Beckinsale.

  10. Hey Gerry, thanks for stopping by.

I hope you’re right about Beckinsale. I hadn’t really thought about her much besides the fact she’s very pretty, but I thought she was great in Snow Angels and again here.

  11. Why are people surprsied when it turns out Beckinsale can act? There was a time wihen she was a critics’ darling in indie movies.

  12. The singular psychological scarring brought about by viewing Pearl Harbor made many people believe that anyone involved in its making could not have possessed the least bit of talent, and may have obliterated any positive memories moviegoers had of those involved.

  13. Pearl Harbor and Underworld and Van Helsing I think introduced her to most people.

  14. I always make the comparison to Charlize Theron. Around 1998 or so, Theron was the Hollywood next big thing, but was starring in terrible films. Beckinsale - coming off critical notice in Last Days of Disco, Cold Comfort Farm, etc. - was probably the same for indies. If you told critics then who would have an Oscar and who wouldn’t in ten years, they would be very surprised, I think, to know.

  15. Those are all good points. I wonder how much of Beckinsale’s career has been her choices as an actress and how much of it is Hollywood wanting to cast her as another Hot Chick?

This is going to be an interesting film because Lurie has changed the context of the story, which could theoretically change the audience’s sympathies. I still find it interesting that Miller was scourned for fulfilling a basic premise of modern journalism (ie, protecting one’s sources) but received little scrutiny for simply not doing her job (ie, fact checking the manufactured and/or distorted evidence the administration was feeding her).

If Lurie’s film ignores those aspects of the story, then it will be doing history a disservice.

  16. Nobody put a gun to Beckinsale’s head to make her do Pearl Harbor, Underworld, Van Helsing, Underworld 2, or Click. Theron has definitely been in some stinkers but the mere fact that she could handle both the likes of Monster and Arrested Development makes her a more interesting actress, to me.

  17. Agreed, Jeff, no one put a gun to her head. On the other hand, personally, I don’t find it that offensive to feed the beast. I don’t blame her for wanting to make a star’s living. The thing is that you have to feed the beast so that you can do the good work that you want to do. Beckinsale admittedly has done too little of that lately, until this year, with the double bill of this film and Snow Angels. At the same time when she has done it, she usually does a good job of it, such as Aviator.

Joel, on the other hand, as a former journalist who did his share of investigative work, I can say you have to be prepared to go to jail. That’s just the risk that you accept. It’s part of the job. I haven’t seen the film and don’t have an opinion on it, but personally, I find it a little unappealing to seeking martyr status for someone doing their job.

  18. Good point, K.

  19. I never sat through any of the crappy Kate Beckinsale movies…I might have one of them I got as a free blu-ray, still haven’t watched it.

So, my opinion of her remains untainted.

Without getting too much into the movie, I don’t think her character martyrs herself, she really is just doing her job, but the film celebrates what a fine thing it is.

Also, forget about Judith Miller. The whole background of the story is different. Has nothing to do with the Iraq war for example.
