Trailer #2: The International

Here’s another look at Tom Tykwer’s The International starring Clive Owen and Naomi Watts. I’ve been interested in this one for a while just based on the people involved, but the first trailer didn’t do much to inspire confidence plus there’s the whole matter of the February dumping ground.

This trailer looks similar but a bit more interesting and I’m still cautiously interested.

  1. EUROPEAN GOOF: You don’t have the authority to arrest me.

CLIVE (with a VERY BIG GUN): Who said ANYTHING about arresting you?

    Hah.

You know, I caught the majority of the first BOURNE flick on TV early this morning (for the first time). To a degree, this is what THE INTERNATIONAL reminds me of.

Still thinking about this. Clive and Naomi together are big selling points for me. But this is LIKELY to be a mediocre, pedestrian mess that’s a couple of notches above your average direct to DVD flick.

    We shall see…

  2. Uh, yeah. This still looks like a movie that could have just as easily been directed by Tony Scott starring Nicolas Cage.

I know Tykwer hasn’t had anything resembling a hit in a long while, but what are Clive Owen and Naomi Watts doing in this?

I hope, nay I pray, that the finished film is ten times better than these awful trailers portray it to be.

  3. I guess I’ve only seen Tykwer’s Run Lola Run and The Princess and The Warrior, but I loved both. I also thought his was one of the strongest entries in Paris Je ‘Taime or however you spell it.

I haven’t seen this trailer, but I’m still interested.

  4. I agree that this trailer looks generic, but still handsome - and has anyone other than Matthew Barney ever shot inside of the Guggenheim?
Tykwer might not have had a hit in this country in a long time, but Perfume was a major hit in Europe/the rest of the world. Our loss, I thought it was one of the best films of that year.

  5. Yeah I skipped Perfume, no real reason why. My sister joked with me because I have quite an amazing sense of smell as well.

  6. I thought Perfume was pretty and had some amazing moments in it, but it never really grabbed me. I’d agree that Run Lola Run is his best film and I liked Heaven quite a bit too, but Princess and the Warrior did little for me, I’m afraid.

Perfume played for one week on one screen here in Portland with no marketing whatsoever. The studio just dumped it in the states.

Anyway, I’m always curious about Tykwer but this looks extremely mainstream, which may not be bad but doesn’t get me enthused.

  7. Well considering Princess is the last one I saw, and eight years ago at that, I can’t say much about it. I do remember liking the bank scenes and Potente, though. I also like Benno Furmann (also in Speed Racer this year), who I ALWAYS get confused with Moritz Bleibtreu, who was in Lola Rennt and Fatah Akin’s Im Juli.

No denying that a move to the mainstream is annoying.

  8. Moritz Bleibtreu rocks.

  9. Hm.
