It's pretty hard to shine when you're on screen with Philip Seymour Hoffman, but I was surprised at how well he held his own.

Looks like Hawke is playing a Johnny Boy-style spaz in this one.

I don't know why he doesn't get cast in these roles more often. I've always thought he was kind of goony-looking for a leading man. He strikes me as the type who typically gets stuck playing junkies and mental defectives. I guess I just don't get his appeal as a sexy hunk.

I do agree that he was decent in BTDKYD. He was outclassed by his castmates, but at least he didn't bring the movie down.

Yeah, Ethan seems to be spinning his wheels a little bit, but then again, up until Devil, I was not his #1 fan. That role convinced me he could act.

I like them both too. But I would have liked to see Ethan Hawke in something else between this and Before the Devil... so that it would see less like his character from that downward spiral life of crime drama walked off the set and into this downward spiral life of crime drama. Little Ethan, when will you learn crime is NOT the answer?

Otherwise, it looks reasonably promising. My sister works with kids at those inner city South Boston schools, from those neighborhoods, so it interests me on that level, too.

When it comes to Mark Ruffalo, I am totally onboard too. I really thought he would get some awards attention in ’07 with Reservation Road and Zodiac. Too bad the former wasn’t very good and the latter was completely ignored. Same goes for Hawke, who was great in Before The Devil Knows You're Dead. Which was also ignored. Ugh.

What Doesn’t Kill You looks good enough though, and the TIFF reviews were pretty positive (the few I read).
