I think Awards Daily’s Sasha Stone secretly enjoys having me publicly humiliate myself because from time to time she asks me to join her and her infinitely smarter awards watching collegues in making predictions about this or that award. Other than predicting that it will probably be sunny in Los Angeles tomorrow, I’m not so hot on the guessing games, but I’m not one to let a challenge just lie there either.

But why let just the AD readers see my ass hanging out? For your amusement, here are my predictions for the upcoming Los Angeles Film Critics Association (today) and the New York Film Critics Circle (soonish):

Los Ang-glus:

Best Picture: Milk (screw you Prop Hate!)
Best Director: Jonathan Demme, Rachel Getting Married
Best Actor: Sean Penn, Milk
Best Actress: Anne Hathaway, Rachel Getting Married
Best Supporting Actor: Josh Brolin, Milk
Best Supporting Actress: Rosemarie DeWitt, Rachel Getting Married

New Yawk:

Best Picture: Synecdoche New York
Best Director: Steven Soderbergh, Che
Best Actor: Mickey Rourke, The Wrestler
Best Actress: Kristin Scott Thomas, I’ve Loved You So Long
Best Supporting Actor: Heath Ledger, The Dark Knight
Best Supporting Actress: Debra Winger, Rachel Getting Married

Obviously I’m counting on a little LA Prop 8 backlash to put Milk over the top, but my confidence level in this happening is about 12%. When Slumdog and The Dark Knight clean up, feel free to kick me right in the comments section. Also feel free to throw in your two cents before the awards hit.

You can see all the other prediculations over at Awards Daily.

  1. These are actually excellent predictions Craig, and many of these can come to fruition. The only one I would seriously doubt would be Steven Soderbergh. The film’s mixed notices from the very same critics who are members of NYFCC make this quite the long-shot. But it’s certainly not out of the question. Of course SLUMDOG is lurking again, and films like THE VISITOR, THE EDGE OF HEAVEN, RACHEL GETTING MARRIED, are still all in the mix.

Your New York Best Pix is gutsy. Kudos to you for it, I would love to see it happen for several reasons.

  2. BLESS THE LOS ANGELES FILM CRITICS!!!!!!

BLESS THE LOS ANGELES FILM CRITICS!!!!!!

BLESS THE LOST ANGELES FILM CRITICS!!!!

    I am absoulutely ECSTATIC!!!!!!

    Why???

A little while ago they named WALL-E as the Best Film of the Year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    THIS IS TREMENDOUS, TREMENDOUS NEWS!!!!!!!

WALL-E will almost certainly be my own Number 1 film as well.

This also gives the film a REAL chance at going beyond the animated category at the Oscars!!!!!

    LOS ANGELES I salute you!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Thanks for the news, Sam. That’s awesome that they’re thinking out of the box and acknowledging the film as a great film rather than pigeon-holing it as a great animated film.

  4. Indeed Alison, Indeed. I was thinking the same thing. This is a monumental development!!!!

  5. I’d pay good money to see your ass hanging out, Craig.

    Believe me…

  6. That’s kinda gross.

  7. On both sides.

  8. Miranda, if it was worth showing, everyone would know about it. Believe me.
