DGA Nominations
I picked the wrong week to be busy. The awards news is flying fast and furious. Here are the Directors Guild of America nominations.
- David Fincher, Benjamin Button
- Danny Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire
- Ron Howard, Frost/Nixon
- Christopher Nolan, The Dark Knight
- Gus Van Sant, Milk
Did you guess which of these nominees is not like the other nominees? (You so smart)
(also, this is absolutely the last Sesame Street reference for one month)

Howard over the likes of Aronofsky makes me a tad sad. Hell, as does Nolan over Aronofsky.
I think you should have Sesame Street and/or Muppet skits every week.
Here’s one of my favorite Muppet skits: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0yvHWyvexZA

Patti LaBelle pwns all.
Stealing my own comment from “Lest we forget the cinematographers”…
The DGA nominations just helped The Dark Knight out rather enormously. This seems to point to Christopher Nolan being nominated (though the DGA and AMPAS do not always meet perfectly with one another in their nominations). Of the directors whose films were likely Best Picture nominees, he seemed the most vulnerable.
Opie has everyone hypnotized!
Agg, the server just gagged on my comment.
Briefly: Alison, that Rita Moreno skit is awesome. Future candidate for Weekend Forecast musical sponsor.
I was reluctant to see the awards potential of TDK beyond technical and Heath Ledger, but then I also didn’t think it would crack $400 million at the box office.
As for Opie, I guess I just have to admit that although he doesn’t make movies that appeal to me, he does what he does very well and his movies are generally very popular. Plus he’s probably a super nice guy that everyone just likes. Who am I to argue with a bunch of people who actually direct for a living?
I don’t have to like it, but no one asked me.
hahhahahahaha! wow….
I guessed right! that video is AMAZING
yes. This list is strangely similar to what
the academy is SUPPOSED to nominate….
but i’ve always experienced the oscars to be
a bit more unpredictable than expected. Since
this is the list the dga came up with, the
academy WILL be different, i’m not sure how,
but God help it be WALL-E!!!!
That’s an interesting thought about WALL-E Matt. I tend to think the Animation Ghetto will be too hard for it to overcome, but if there’s a curve ball, that’s probably going to be it.
The DGA snub would actually make sense because the old-school directors probably don’t see directing animation in the same light (I’m not sure if that’s true or not, just a hunch…but I wonder how often an animation director got a nod).
Yeah, I think the whole reason there is an Best Animated Feature was over the embarrassment of nominating Beauty and the Beast back in the 90’s. Everyone knows an ANIMATED FEATURE can’t be Best Picture, right? Just like comedies are always exempt from that honor too.
I KID!!
Anyway, Matt, I hope you’re right. It would be wonderful to see the Academy go out on a little limb there even though it would still have a slim chance of winning.
If WALL-E got nominated, I wonder how disadvantaged it would be for a win since the largest single voting block, the actors, aren’t well represented in the film. Even less in WALL-E than a film like Kung Fu Panda with lots of voice acting.
Of course, I’m putting the cart before the robot here since the nominations haven’t been anounced…
Yeah, that sure wouldn’t help it. Weird how all these bizarre things factor into our assumptions, but they seem to pan out.
Matt K. is the darling of LIC!!!!
I believe my friend, I believe…………
